Here are two paintings by Nirmala Dutt (1941-2016, Malaysia) who researched wayang kulit and used them as inspiration, Anti-Nuclear Piece (1988) and Friends in Need (1986). Now at the National Gallery Singapore’s exhibit, “Fear No Power: Women Imagining Otherwise”, she presents the main actors of Cold War tensions like puppet masters pulling the strings of history. Adopting wayang kulit’s symbolic language to reinforce her anti-war stance, Nirmala Dutt observes: "We associate social criticism with the West... but there is a tradition of social criticism in the East. Wayang kulit is another example."

Learn from 柯世宏 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗵 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝗼, award-winning Potehi master from Taiwan’s renowned Puppet Troupe. A leading figure in contemporary Potehi, Ken Ho has won numerous performance awards and is frequently invited to perform and speak at festivals and symposiums across the US, Europe, and Asia.

This 𝟰-𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 (𝟴 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆) offers an in-depth exploration of Potehi performance — from manipulation and movement to rhythm and storytelling. Participants will work towards 𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀, guided by the master himself.
