What a fantastic DIY Drone class yesterday! 🚁

Our DIY Basics Workshop – Build Your Own Drone was completely sold out, and the workshop was packed with curious questions, excitement, and plenty of laughter. Participants got hands-on building their own drones from scratch, learning the basics of electronics, assembly, and how these flying machines actually work.

From first-time builders to curious tinkerers, it was great to see everyone dive in, help one another, and celebrate those first successful flights.

🚁 Behind the Scenes – Preparing for the Drone Workshop!

Organizing a workshop is always more than just showing up on the day. Behind the scenes, there’s a lot of preparation to make sure everyone has a great experience.

Over the past few days, our team has been busy building, customizing, and testing the drones that will be used in the workshop. We run multiple dry runs, test the electronics, tune the flight settings, and make sure everything works reliably. Nothing is left to chance — the goal is to make sure participants can focus on learning and having fun.

We also spend time thinking about the learning journey. How do we explain things clearly? How do we make it exciting but still safe? How do we make sure complete beginners feel comfortable?

At the Community Workshop @ VidaCity, our workshops are designed to be hands-on and experiential. You won’t just sit and watch — you will build, experiment, troubleshoot, and fly your own drone.

Most importantly, it’s beginner-friendly. Whether you’re completely new to electronics or just curious about how drones work, we’ll guide you step-by-step in a safe and supportive environment.

It’s always fun seeing the moment when a participant’s drone takes off for the first time — that mix of excitement, pride, and a little bit of “wah it actually works!” 😄

What makes us tick!

This is our youngest “resident maker” (photo shared with his mother’s permission).

He walked into the workshop one afternoon and asked how he could learn 3D printing. Just a member of the public who was around, one of our volunteers showed him the machine, explained a few basics, and told him what software he could try.

One week later, he came back with a USB drive. Inside was a small STL file — a name tag with his own name on it. Not fancy. But he did it himself.
Over the next few weekends, he kept showing up. Designing. Testing. Improving. Asking sharper questions each time.

What impressed me wasn’t just that he learned fast. It was how he carried himself. Polite. Respectful. Listens properly. Follows instructions.

And honestly, this story isn’t about a 12-year-old. We see this across the board.
Office workers touching tools for the first time.
Uncles picking up new software.
Parents learning together with their kids.

Age doesn’t decide who can learn. Attitude does.

A community workshop like this isn’t powerful because of the machines. It works because people are willing to share, and others are willing to try.

Sometimes all it takes is walking in and asking,

“Can teach me or not?”

The rest is up to you.
