🌿 Stories of Our Community — Bishan East - Sin Ming Resident Lee Tang Teng (TT)

Built to Carry More

“Use the time to improve again and again. We will get there someday.”

A retired engineer and grassroots leader since 1992, TT brings creativity and dedication to serving the Bishan community. As chairman of Bishan’s Community Arts and Culture Club, he brings residents together through arts and music.

He is also the mind behind a homemade trishaw train! Originally built to ferry his three children to school, it grew into a creation enjoyed by his family, neighbours and the wider community.

Decades later, TT continues to repair and improve the train, often giving discarded materials a new purpose. His story reflects the joy of creating, solving problems and sharing what we build with others.

His life lesson? Take the first step, even if you haven’t figured everything out. Be willing to try, learn from others and keep improving along the way.

🌿 Stories of Our Community — Bishan East - Sin Ming Resident Lee Ker Hwa

Handing over the Reins

“Leadership begins with courage, grows through trust and also inspires others.”

When Ker Hwa joined her sisters at the Residents’ Committee in 1991, curiosity sparked a journey that would become more than three decades of service to the Bishan community.

She went on to chair the Women’s Executive Committee for 24 years and took on the Residents’ Committee chairmanship in 2005, organising activities that brought residents together.

Once reserved, Ker Hwa learnt to step forward, trust those around her and give others the opportunity to lead. Today, having stepped back from her leadership roles, she takes pride in seeing the volunteers she guided confidently carry the community forward.

Her life lesson? Step forward when you are needed, and give others the trust and opportunity to lead in their own way.

🌿 Stories of Our Community — Bishan East - Sin Ming Grassroots Leader Kuna

The Quiet Service

“Age is just a number, I believe in giving the next generation a chance.”

For Kuna, serving the community also means creating opportunities for others to lead.

Over three decades with the Tamils Representative Council, he rose from volunteer to Vice President before making way for new leaders in 2023. He also founded Sirpigal in 2006, handing over its presidency in 2021.

His belief in people’s ability to change began during his work as a Custodial Officer with the Singapore Prison Service. That belief continues to guide his community service, including 16 years of mentoring youths at the Bishan Indian Activity Centre and giving them room to grow and lead.

His life lesson? Pursue what you want to do in life, while giving something back to the community along the way.

🌿 Stories of Our Community — Bishan East - Sin Ming Resident Christopher Lim

From the Heart

“As long as we serve from the heart, we've done a good job.”

What began as a favour to a friend—teaching neighbours basic computer skills—grew into 25 years of community service for Christopher.

As former Chairman of Bishan East Zone 3 Residents’ Network, he brought residents together through block parties, outdoor events and excursions. Today, he continues serving as a BESM grassroots leader, helping residents in need find support.

Alongside his banking career, Christopher volunteers as a career adviser and mentor. A drummer since age nine, he also shares his love of music at charity events and community gatherings. Having benefited from the kindness of others, he believes everyone can make time to give back.

His life lesson? Even an hour a week can make a difference. When we want to serve, we can find the time.

For Woffles, family is part of who he is. His journey reflects the lasting influence of loved ones, mentors and the experiences that have shaped his outlook on life.

Through his work, creative pursuits and lifelong curiosity, he continues to learn, grow and discover new ways of seeing the world. At the heart of it all is a deep appreciation for the people he has grown up with, learnt from and loved.

His life lesson? Remember where you come from. Recognising the people who have shaped us helps us understand ourselves and the person we hope to become.

🌿 Stories of Our Neighbours — BRN Resident Vaidy Swamy

A Life Well-Lived

From humble beginnings in a 600 sq ft flat in Mumbai, Vaidy grew up with the values of integrity, hard work and education instilled by his father.

Curiosity and adaptability took him across countries throughout his career, before he found a home in Singapore. Each experience helped him grow and see life from different perspectives.

After retiring at 53, Vaidy chose to give back to the society that had helped him build his life and career. Today, he continues to learn—picking up Mandarin to connect with seniors, alongside exploring music and AI tools.

His advice? Step outside your comfort zone, stay open to new environments and be confident in expressing your views. Keep learning wherever life takes you.

What Success Leaves Behind

“Knowledge only has value when it is shared.”

Sonny built a career in sales, marketing and management across countries and cultures. But frequent travel made him realise how much family time he was missing, changing how he viewed success.

As a manager, he found purpose in mentoring colleagues and helping them discover careers that suited them. Sharing his knowledge became an important part of his journey.

After retirement, Sonny stayed connected through gardening, golf, Tai Chi and community activities. Today, he believes a fulfilling life is built on family, relationships, sharing knowledge and staying adaptable.

His advice? Take life one step at a time. Stay open to change, make time for the people who matter and share what you have learnt.

🌿 Thank You for Another Wonderful Green Steps Walk! 🌿

A big thank you to all our residents and fellow GRLs who joined our Green Steps – North East CDC Trail @ Punggol last Sunday! 💚

It was lovely to see everyone out bright and early, enjoying the 6.9 km walk, fresh air, greenery and, most importantly, one another’s company. 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️🌳

Special thanks to the Bishan Loft RN and Bishan RN GRLs and volunteers who helped organise and support the walk, and to everyone who came along and made the morning so enjoyable.

Green Steps is not just about keeping active — it’s also about discovering different parts of Singapore, making new friends and staying connected as a community.
