SMU Apolitical Society was honoured to organise The Long View Forum: Past, Present, Future, bringing together distinguished speakers to examine the evolving challenges of AI, disinformation, and national security. 🤝

Featuring Mr K Shanmugam, Senior Minister, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs; Mr Jānis Sārts, Director of the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence; Professor Edson Tandoc, Professor of Communications Studies and Founding Director of the Centre for Information and the Internet at NTU; Professor Kumar Ramakrishna, Professor of Practice in International Security Studies and Dean of RSIS; Mr Warren Fernandez, Senior Fellow at RSIS and Head of NSSP; and Mr Keith Yap, Founder of The Front Row podcast, the forum brought together diverse perspectives on the intersection of technology, information and national security. 💬

Through an engaging guest lecture, panel discussion and interactive Q&A sessions, our speakers explored how artificial intelligence is reshaping the information landscape, the growing threat of disinformation, and the implications for public trust and national security. The discussions also highlighted the importance of strengthening societal resilience and navigating an increasingly complex digital world.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our distinguished speakers for generously sharing their expertise and insights, and for engaging meaningfully with our student community. We would also like to thank RSIS and the National Security Studies Programme (NSSP) for their collaboration and support in making this forum possible. 🙏

A special thank you goes to the SMU Apolitical Society EXCO and organising team, alongside our supporting staff, for their dedication and effort in bringing this event to life.

Finally, thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed thoughtful questions and perspectives throughout the session. Your participation made this forum a valuable opportunity to reflect on the issues shaping our collective future.

We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events! 💙

Behind the Speaker’s Chair — Join Us for an Exclusive Dialogue with the Speaker of Parliament

Parliament is often seen from the outside — through Question Time clips, Budget debate headlines, or the occasional viral exchange in the House. But what does it actually take to run the institution at the heart of Singapore’s political system, especially through moments of crisis, disruption, and generational change?

As Singapore navigates an increasingly complex landscape — from AI and demographic shifts to evolving expectations of civic participation — questions about how Parliament adapts, consults, and maintains trust have never been more relevant to young Singaporeans thinking about their place in this system.

Join us for an intimate dialogue with Mr Seah Kian Peng, the Speaker of Parliament, who brings a rare vantage point — having served as Deputy Speaker between 2011 to 2016 and now presided over the House as Speaker since 2023.
This is a rare opportunity to move beyond the formalities of Parliament and hear directly from the person responsible for holding the institution together — its culture, its guardrails, and its future.

Be part of the conversation and gain a deeper understanding of how Singapore’s Parliament works, and where it’s headed.
