At SEMICON Southeast Asia 2026, we spoke with Ts. Norhizam Ibrahim, Executive Director, Manufacturing Development (Non-Resource) at Malaysian Investment Development Authority, about the developments shaping Malaysiaโ€™s semiconductor and electronics manufacturing landscapeโ€”and how the country is strengthening its ecosystem for the next phase of growth.

In the interview, Ts. Norhizam Ibrahim highlights Malaysiaโ€™s continued move up the value chain, from its long-established strengths in assembly, testing, and packaging toward higher-value activities such as IC design and advanced packaging, supported by the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS) and NIMP 2030. He also points to the rapid rise of AI infrastructure and the continued commitment of major industry players at SEMICON SEA 2026 as strong signals of confidence in Malaysiaโ€™s direction.

He also shares how Malaysian Investment Development Authority is taking a two-pronged approach to ecosystem development: attracting global semiconductor leaders while strengthening local SME capabilities through linkage, vendor development, and digitalisation initiatives. Looking ahead, he underscores talent as a critical priorityโ€”highlighting Malaysiaโ€™s ambition to train and upskill 60,000 highly skilled engineers by 2030 and build stronger pathways into specialised areas such as IC design, advanced packaging, wafer fabrication, and equipment engineering.

At SEMICON Southeast Asia 2026, we spoke with Mr. Amarjit Sandhu, Corporate Vice President, Assembly & Test NAND Operations at Micron Technology (Singapore and Malaysia), about how memory and NAND manufacturing are evolving as demand accelerates around AI, data centres, and advanced computing.

In the interview, Amarjit shares how AI-centric workloads are driving a structural shift in memory demand toward higher bandwidth, higher capacity, and greater energy efficiencyโ€”accelerating the adoption of solutions such as HBM, DDR5, and high-performance NAND-based enterprise SSDs. He also explains why this is raising the strategic importance of backend manufacturing, as assembly, test, and packaging become increasingly critical to quality, precision, and performance in the global AI supply chain.

He also reflects on how Micron Technology Malaysia is positioning itself as a high-value, AI-aligned manufacturing hub, supporting advanced assembly, qualification, and testing for products feeding into AI data centres and edge applications. Looking ahead, he highlights smart manufacturing, workforce upskilling, sustainability, and energy resilience as key differentiators that will shape the leading semiconductor hubs in Asia over the next few years.
