At SEMICON West, the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and SEMI announced a strategic collaboration aimed at advancing Malaysia’s electrical and electronics (E&E) and semiconductor industry.

The collaboration was marked by Ajit Manocha, President and CEO of SEMI, and Dato' Indera Abu Bakar Yusof, CEO of MATRADE.

Dato’ Indera Abu Bakar Yusof is presently attending SEMICON West, leading a delegation of 10 Malaysian companies showcasing diverse capabilities across the semiconductor ecosystem.

𝗘𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘁 𝗡𝗮𝗺'𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀

At the SEMI SEA Energy Closed-Door Meeting in Hanoi on 2 October, SEMI Southeast Asia brought together government representatives, semiconductor manufacturers, energy providers, and infrastructure partners to discuss the role of clean energy in supporting Viet Nam's semiconductor ambitions.

Ms. Linda Tan, President of SEMI Southeast Asia, highlighted the industry's growing need for reliable, affordable, and low-carbon electricity, and reaffirmed SEMI's commitment to advancing collaborative solutions that enable future growth. Representatives from the Ministry of Science and Technology echoed these priorities, emphasizing that energy readiness, alongside continued investments in technology and talent, will be critical to strengthening Viet Nam's competitiveness as a semiconductor investment destination.

Building on the discussion, Ms. So Young Jang, Director of Sustainability and Energy Partnerships at SEMI, presented the work of SEMI Energy Collaborative and recommendations aimed at strengthening energy reliability, affordability, and predictability for renewable electricity procurement. The exchange explored how regulatory reforms, grid modernization, and battery energy storage could expand access to clean power while ensuring the operational resilience semiconductor manufacturing requires.

Manufacturers and infrastructure partners contributed valuable industry perspectives, connecting the needs of current operations with future growth plans. The insights gathered will help shape SEMI's final recommendations to the Vietnamese government, which will be shared at SEMIEXPO Viet Nam 2026 this December.

Viet Nam's ambition to train 50,000 semiconductor engineers by 2030 will be shaped not only in lecture halls and laboratories, but also through stronger partnerships between academia and industry.

To support this ambition, SEMI Southeast Asia brought together representatives from academia, government and industry for a session on "SEMI–IHL Workforce Development Partnership" in Ho Chi Minh City on 30 September and Hanoi on 1 October.

The sessions engaged representatives from seven universities in Ho Chi Minh City and five in Hanoi, alongside government and industry partners, to explore how education and training can better support Viet Nam’s semiconductor workforce needs. In both cities, SEMI highlighted upcoming student programs, including the SEMI TECH Zoomers Bootcamp and TalentCONNECT at SEMIEXPO Viet Nam 2026, alongside regional initiatives. Building on the participation of over 300 students last year, the focus is on deeper industry exposure and stronger faculty–industry ties to help students prepare for semiconductor careers.

Across both sessions, there was a shared recognition of the value of cross-border partnerships and continued collaboration among academia, government, industry, and SEMI in strengthening Viet Nam's semiconductor talent pipeline.

On 1 October, Ms. Linda Tan, President of SEMI Southeast Asia, was pleased to meet with Mr. Truong Viet Dung, Member of the Hanoi City Party Committee and Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee.

Ms. Linda Tan reaffirmed SEMI's commitment to connecting Vietnamese small and medium-sized enterprises with the global semiconductor ecosystem and supply chain. The discussion identified three priority areas for collaboration: developing a skilled semiconductor workforce, strengthening SME capabilities to participate in global supply chains, and advancing the energy infrastructure required to support high-tech manufacturing. Both parties also expressed interest in pursuing a Memorandum of Understanding to guide future cooperation and joint initiatives.

Mr. Truong Viet Dung shared Hanoi's strategic focus on high technology and advanced manufacturing, supported by continued investment in industrial parks and digital infrastructure. In the semiconductor sector, the city is prioritizing research and development, as well as packaging and testing capabilities, with workforce development recognized as a key enabler of long-term ecosystem growth.
