Myles – Soulmate in a Box is a bold, speculative musical written by and starring the multi-disciplinary artist Inch Chua. Co-created and presented by the Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT), the resulting musical was an effort of love when artificial intelligence (AI) research drove Inch to teach herself to code from the pandemic. She joked during the after-show chat that Myles was created as a counterpoint to herself so if she should pass on, her family could simply talk to Myles in her stead.
Though the play’s central romance is a composite of different experiences, its depiction of our rapid adoption of AI serves as a broader perspective. It mirrors the sentiment shared by Inch: that by inventing the airplane, we inadvertently created the airplane crash which then presents the question of what the ‘plane crash’ on AI might be, if there were to be one.
During the Singaporean singer-songwriter’s interview with The Straits Times, Inch insisted on writing all eight of the show’s songs as part of her integrity as a music creator. More importantly, she shared her stance on AI during the ST Interview: “Like every tool, I would be sad if my washing machine broke down, but I’ll be capable of washing my own clothes, you know?”
