So we’ve all seen that video. It has raised plenty of debate about what is appropriate and what isn’t, how societal norms have shifted over the years, and more.
We have to acknowledge the behavioural and cultural differences across generations. More often than not, elderly folk tend to show their affection for children by giving them pats on the head or briefly touching their cheeks and hands. They have no malicious intent, and the way they show their affection is to give children a gentle touch or pinch their cheeks, even if it’s the first time they are meeting the child. Of course, social norms have changed, strictly emphasising body autonomy and parental consent. And so, younger parents may not be as accomodating to strangers touching their children...even if it’s meant as a sign of affection. But perhaps more importantly, we should talk about our response, and what it should be if it happens to us.
