Only a handful of termites, such as Coptotermes (globally invasive) and Cryptotermes, are known to infest homes and damage structures.
Most termites that the general public do not know of are actually native forest/soil species that generally do not invade homes. These termites play important ecological roles in breaking down dead plant material, recycling nutrients, and maintaining healthy soils in Singapore’s greenery
So while termites can definitely be serious pests in certain situations, not every termite seen is necessarily “bad” or destructive to buildings.

🪲 Call for sightings: Leaf-footed bugs (Coreidae) in Singapore

Researchers visiting Singapore this May are studying male–male competition in several leaf-footed bug species, and are looking for sightings — especially of Physomerus grossipes.

They are particularly interested in:
• Reproducing populations
• Multiple individuals in one area
• Presence of nymphs or host plants

Physomerus grossipes is commonly associated with morning glories (Ipomoea), including:
🌿 Sweet potato
🌿 Beach morning glory
🌿 Kangkong

If you’ve recently seen populations, or spot any from now till end-May, do share your sightings/photos.

Not confident about the ID? Send it anyway — even possible sightings are helpful.

He is the voice that transformed insects from “creepy crawlies” into creatures of wonder, complexity, and importance.
His documentaries showed that even the smallest organisms can shape entire ecosystems.

At a time where insects are often overlooked or misunderstood, his work reminds us that curiosity is one of the first steps towards conservation.

Recent reports highlight large numbers of cicadas emerging in parts of Tampines Changkat, and such events are part of how cicadas naturally emerge after spending years underground.

But it raises some interesting questions for Singapore:

👉 Are these mass emergences happening elsewhere?
👉 Are they they the same species, or different ones?
👉 Do certain habitats (urban trees, parks, mangroves) show different patterns?

Insects don’t always appear evenly across the island, sometimes they emerge in waves, and sometimes very locally in certain areas.

If you’ve been noticing cicadas in your area, we are keen to hear:

• Location (general area is fine)
• Rough numbers (few / many / overwhelming)
• Any photos or recordings

Some 2,000 cicadas were caught at the same hotspot on two nights. Read more at straitstimes.com. Read more at straitstimes.com.
