IES x ASCE: Elevating the Civil Engineering Landscape 🫱🏽‍🫲🏽

The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) hosted a highly collaborative dialogue with the leadership delegation from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) yesterday (June 9). The session served as a valuable platform to exchange industry insights and map out future strategic synergies between our associations.

The ASCE delegation, led by President Dr Marsha D. Anderson Bomar, brought a wealth of knowledge from their expansive global network. With over 160,000 members worldwide—25% of whom are based outside of North America—ASCE shared highly successful strategies, particularly regarding their youth-focused outreach.

The conversation highlighted several vital pillars for the advancement of the profession:

✔️ Next-Gen Engagement: Pioneering vibrant social media frameworks to captivate and inspire the next generation of engineers.
✔️ Academic Evolution: Resolving structural bottlenecks within compressed undergraduate engineering curricula.
✔️ Agile Governance: Adopting nimble and responsive Technical Committee models.

Additionally, both delegations examined fresh pathways for regional cooperation through the Asian Civil Engineering Coordinating Council (ACECC) to better serve and strengthen the broader engineering ecosystem.

This engagement provided an excellent touchpoint for both institutions to align on common objectives and uncover new avenues for meaningful collaboration. IES is excited to cultivate this ongoing relationship with ASCE, working hand-in-hand to deliver impactful initiatives that uplift and support engineering professionals in Singapore and across the region.

A New Chapter Begins: Welcoming the 31st IES President at the 60th AGM 🔧

A milestone afternoon of reflection, renewal, and leadership at the 60th IES Annual General Meeting!

Held on 23 May 2026 at the IES Auditorium, the 60th AGM gathered nearly 120 members to celebrate the institution’s achievements over the past two years and chart a visionary path forward for Singapore’s engineering community.

The afternoon marked a historic transition as Er. Chan Ewe Jin officially handed over the IES Presidency to Mr Mervyn Sirisena, who was inaugurated as our 31st President. In his inaugural address, Mr Sirisena outlined his vision for a more connected, future-ready, and member-centric institution dedicated to uplifting and empowering engineers across generations.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Er. Chan Ewe Jin for his dedicated leadership and invaluable contributions throughout his tenure, and offer our warmest congratulations to Mr Mervyn Sirisena as he steps into this new chapter.

Together, we continue to engineer the future. 🛠️✨

📢 IES Successfully Concludes Joint Seminar on Vision Zero and Process Safety

The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) successfully concluded our recent seminar, “Vision Zero: Process Safety and Lessons Learned from the Hong Kong Building Fire Incident” on 15 May 2026. Jointly organised by the Chemical & Process Engineering Technical Committee (CAPETC) and the Health and Safety Engineering Technical Committee (HSETC), the event was proudly supported by Nextgen Engineering Works Pte Ltd.

The seminar brought together engineers, regulators, safety professionals, and industry leaders for a timely discussion on applying robust process safety principles beyond chemical plants - extending them to buildings, urban systems, and emerging risk areas.

Through expert presentations and dynamic panel discussions, participants explored critical themes shaping Singapore’s industrial ecosystem:
=> Regulatory frameworks and risk assessment
=> Engineering controls and emergency preparedness
=> Human factors and cultivating a proactive safety culture
=> Mitigating lithium-ion battery hazards and driving continuous improvement

A key takeaway was clear: achieving Vision Zero requires the industry to move beyond mere compliance, strengthen cross-sector learning, and take collective ownership of safety as risks become increasingly complex and interconnected.

IES extends our deepest appreciation to all speakers, moderators, panellists, partners, and organising committee members for contributing to this vital conversation. Together, we continue to advance engineering excellence and uphold our shared responsibility as custodians of public trust.

As Singapore continues to experience rising temperatures, how can we make our homes more heat-proof and comfortable for everyday living?

Last evening (May 12), Er. Dr David Ng shared his expert insights in a live interview on Channel 8’s Hello Singapore on why some homes trap heat more than others, practical ways to improve indoor cooling, and how engineering and building design play a role in creating more liveable spaces.
