Autonomous vehicles are becoming a reality, and many PHV and taxi drivers have questions about what this could mean for their jobs and livelihoods.

That's why we are making sure workers' voices are heard.

In the latest episode of Labour Kong Simi, we highlight our Labour MPs' calls to ensure workers are not left behind as our economy moves with technology. They also discussed recent retrenchment figures and shared their views on how workers can be better supported through these changes.

From pulling scattered information together to having more time for analysis, Kit Wan found a better way to work with AI.

His role involves consolidating inputs from multiple sources and coordinating workflows, timelines and follow-ups across stakeholders. Much of his time was spent gathering information, leaving less room to focus on planning and decision-making.

After taking NTUC LearningHub's Prompt Power: Elevate your Microsoft 365 Copilot Skills course, he learned how to write structured prompts to help organise information into report outlines, draft emails and summaries.

Based on his experience, tasks that used to take up to two days can now often be completed in about half the time. This gives him more time to focus on analysis, problem-solving and supporting stakeholders in decision-making.

Autonomous vehicles are coming. But what will that mean for taxi and private-hire drivers?

In Parliament, NTUC Assistant Secretary-General Yeo Wan Ling made it clear that transport workers are not against technology.

However, where AVs displace work currently performed by taxi and private-hire drivers, the impact on jobs and livelihoods could be significant.

NTUC Assistant Secretary-General Melvin Yong 杨益财 welcomed the Government’s assurance that the deployment of AVs will not outpace efforts to retrain and support drivers. He also asked how this commitment will be measured and stressed that new jobs created must provide sustainable wages, relevant skills and meaningful career progression.

Embracing technology and protecting workers are not opposing choices. As technology moves forward, workers must be supported to move forward with it.

In Parliament, Labour MP Patrick Tay 郑德源 called for closer monitoring of underemployment and better support for workers’ well-being as they go through career transition programmes.

Labour MP Wan Rizal also asked how MOM tracks outcomes for mature PMETs, looking beyond job placements to wage recovery, and the types of employment secured.

Responding, Acting Manpower Minister Jasmin Lau said the Government is reviewing its schemes, including Career Conversion Programmes, to better support workers through transitions. She added that MOM tracks placement rates and wages, and would note changing employment models.

In Parliament, Labour MP Yeo Wan Ling Yeo Wan Ling called for stronger safeguards for workers in non-unionised companies, highlighting that MOM found that unionised companies are more likely to pay retrenchment benefits.

Labour MP Melvin Yong 杨益财 asked how MOM determines when additional support is needed for vulnerable retrenched workers.

In response, Acting Manpower Minister Jasmin Lau said the Government is considering administrative action in egregious cases where employers can afford to pay retrenchment benefits but refuse to do so despite repeated engagements and warnings. The ministry is also reviewing its schemes to identify where support needs strengthening.

Watch the exchange on protecting and supporting workers through retrenchment.

After 14 years as a software engineer, Ricky left his job in 2024 and became a taxi driver, giving him more flexibility to care for his ailing wife and mother.

After losing both of them, caring for his 10-year-old son with autism remains at the heart of how he plans his work and daily life.

Today, Ricky is a full-time taxi driver under Zig by ComfortDelGro’s driver-employee scheme, a partner of NTUC Women and Family’s C U Back at Work programme. The arrangement provides basic pay, CPF contributions, medical and annual leave, while giving him the flexibility to organise his driving around his son’s needs.

As jobs evolve, older workers can continue to grow with the right support. 💪

With support from the NTUC Company Training Committee (CTC) Grant, office supplies retailer and wholesaler Evergreen Stationery worked with NTUC and the Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers' Union (SMMWU) to redesign jobs and upskill its workers, including seniors. An AI-powered e-ordering system was introduced, freeing staff from repetitive manual work and allowing them to focus on higher-value tasks.

This is what job redesign through the CTC framework looks like in practice: better jobs, better wages, better outcomes for workers and businesses alike.
