“Just 15 more minutes online and I’ll get back to work!”
Does this sound familiar? More often than not, we end up surfing the net for the next few hours and giving up on our initial plans. Sometimes, we feel guilty and lament: It’s not our fault that everything is online nowadays. We simply have to be connected in order to function in society! Indeed, complete detachment from the Internet may no
t be wise, or even possible, in the globalised world of today. However, a conscious effort to control our Internet usage has also become a necessity precisely due to this age of connectivity. The logic is apparent when we consider the effects of spending too much time online. Just think about how getting carried away online has affected your life. Less time for some friends and family, negligence of offline duties, crankiness when your Internet use is disrupted, lack of sleep from surfing the net into the wee hours of the night… are all for simple online gratification? This is the very motivation of the Unplug! refers to the act of plugging oneself out of the virtual world. It is only when we realize the need for a healthy balance between time spent online and offline that we can avoid the potential ills of over-indulgence in cyberspace. Join us in making a stand about your time online! The Internet can be a friend or a foe – it all depends on how you use it. At the end of the day, that little effort in moderating your Internet use will go a long way in creating a more fulfilling life. It may be the World Wide Web, but your world is definitely wider than that.
