A Singapore non-profit connecting vulnerable communities with technology

Engineering Good is a non-profit organisation and community in Singapore that supports underserved groups. We salvage and refurbish e-waste like laptops for low-income families and create Assistive Technology (AT) for the disabled community. Working with over 200 organisations in the social service sector locally and in the region, we provide opportunities for volunteers to contribute their expertise and technical skills!

Not every donated laptop gets a second life.

At Engineering Good, reuse comes first. Where possible, usable laptops are refurbished and channelled through our Digital Inclusion work.

But some devices are no longer suitable for reuse. Our responsibility does not end there.

They are passed to KGS, our e-waste partner.

KGS dismantles the devices, destroys the data held on HDDs and SSDs, sorts the different components and sends the materials for further recycling.

A few hours of hands-on volunteering can help move a laptop closer to its next user.

Thank you to the Adyen team for joining Engineering Good to refurbish laptops for our digital inclusion programme. Each device takes time and care to prepare, and corporate volunteers play a part in that work.

Access can be blocked in different ways.

A student may not have a laptop for school. A jobseeker may lack the technology needed to apply for work. A person with a disability may encounter products or environments that were not designed around their needs.

That is why we are launching Bridging Access.

The campaign supports two core areas of Engineering Good’s work.

Through Digital Inclusion, we refurbish decommissioned corporate laptops for students, jobseekers and families who need them. Our broader work also includes digital literacy and guidance.

Through Assistive Technology, persons with disabilities work with innovators, volunteer mentors and disability-sector professionals to develop practical solutions around real needs.

The barriers may be different. Our aim is to help more people gain access to the devices, skills and tools they need.

Eligible donations will receive matching support through the Tote Board Enhanced Fundraising Programme, helping your contribution go further.

Bridging Access runs from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027.

How much screen time is too much?

Singapore’s discussion about possible daily limits for young social-media users has put time back in focus.

A limit can provide a useful boundary. But a daily total does not show what a young person is doing online, how they feel afterwards or what that activity may be replacing.

In Part 1 of our Digital Wellness series, we look beyond the number:

When is technology being used?

What is it being used for?

How does the young person feel afterwards?

Is it crowding out sleep, movement, relationships or responsibilities?

Tools such as Apple Screen Time and Google Family Link can help families review usage and set boundaries. These tools can also provide a starting point for discussing what feels workable and whether the arrangement is helping.

Screen-time limits can create useful boundaries. Understanding how that time is used matters too.

Who gets considered when we design the world around us?

This Friday, our Impact Lead, Denise Ho, takes the TEDxTanglinTrustSchool stage with "How are we designing a more inclusive world?".

Drawing from Engineering Good’s work in Assistive Technology, Denise will explore how the way we understand a problem shapes the solutions we create - and what happens when we start designing with more people in mind from the beginning.

We’re looking forward to the conversation on 18 September.

As AI and technology advance, are they bridging gaps or widening divides in access and opportunity?

Our Chairperson Lim May-Ann joined fellow community leaders at Maybank Securities’ Trade for Good on 27 August for a conversation on "What Does Inclusion Mean in a Technology-Driven World?".

For Engineering Good, technological progress needs to go hand in hand with inclusion - ensuring people have not just access to technology, but the skills and accessible solutions to benefit from it meaningfully.

This is reflected in our work across Digital Inclusion and Assistive Technology, and in our partnership with Maybank and The Majurity Trust. Engineering Good was among the inaugural recipients of the Maybank Momentum Grant in 2021.

As technology opens up new possibilities, we need to make sure more people can be part of them.

Singapore is considering stronger safeguards for teens on social media, including possible daily time limits and changes to features such as autoplay and infinite scroll.

These measures have a role to play. But screen time is only part of the conversation.

We should also ask: how are young people spending their time online, and how can we help them use it well?

At Engineering Good, one way of thinking about meaningful digital engagement is:

Learn. Create. Connect. Contribute. Recharge.

Meaningful does not mean productive every minute. Entertainment, connection and downtime matter too. It is about building the skills and confidence to make more intentional choices about technology, while maintaining balance with life offline.

Families, platforms, educators, community organisations, policymakers and young people all have a part to play.

Digital inclusion is not only about getting connected. It is also about helping people use technology well.
