The Singapore Flower Club is a non-profit organisation founded in 1971. Our main aims are to promote interest in flower arranging and to encourage international friendship through flowers. Our members range from experts with professional training and many years of experience both here and abroad to complete novices. We meet regularly on Friday mornings in the poolside pavilion at The Arcadia, Arcadia Road. New members, guests and flower friends are always welcome.

On 11 September, Singapore Flower Club members enjoyed an inspiring workshop with Christina Pang, AIFD, CFD, at CreativeWorkz Studio, Far East Flora, Clementi.

The session began with a refreshing revisit of three essential floral design principles: Line, Form, and Emphasis. Through two beautiful demonstration pieces, Christina showed how thoughtful use of foliage, textures, and structural materials can create striking compositions, even without fresh flowers!

For the hands-on session, members explored an unconventional approach, transforming a simple metal organiser stand, tree branches, elastic threads, and glass tubes into a creative base for floral arrangements. Using Anthuriums, Begonia foliage, and steel grass, everyone developed their own unique designs.

What looked simple at first turned out to be an interesting challenge, with plenty of opportunities to experiment, refine, and learn!

Everyone went home with their own creation, while three lucky members received additional prizes.

A big thank you to Christina for another engaging and inspiring workshop, reminding us that even the most experienced floral enthusiasts can always discover something new by revisiting the fundamentals! 💚

🌿 Important Notes

Accommodation is based on twin sharing; a single-room supplement applies.

Meals indicated as being at participants’ own expense are not included.

Flights are not included. The nearest airport is Zhengzhou. Participants may arrange their own travel before or after the programme if they wish to explore other destinations in China.

Brief translation assistance will be available for participants who do not speak Chinese. Relevant information can also be provided in advance for sightseeing activities.

Participants wishing to extend their stay may do so. Angela will be departing from Zhengzhou Airport on the morning of 22 October and will be around until then.

What a wonderful morning of creativity, teamwork and flowers at our Hanging Florals Workshop on 14 August at Hillcrest Arcadia!

This workshop came with a little twist — there was no demonstration! Instead, participants were challenged to work together and create two professional-style table settings from scratch, similar to the floral installations often seen at weddings and formal events.

Led by Giang Ta Quynh, the workshop began with an introduction to two contrasting concepts: one elegant and sophisticated, featuring a restrained colour palette, and the other vibrant, colourful and playful. Participants were then divided into two teams and given just two hours to transform metal structures, fresh, dried and preserved floral materials, tableware, candles and other accessories into complete tablescapes.

From deciding on focal areas and proportions to constructing the frames, arranging flowers and styling the tables, the exercise was as much about communication, problem-solving and teamwork as it was about floral design. There was plenty of discussion, experimentation and laughter along the way!

Despite the time pressure, both teams completed their installations beautifully, each with its own distinctive character. Most importantly, everyone had the opportunity to try something different and experience how a large-scale floral concept comes together through collaboration.

A wonderful morning spent learning, creating and sharing the joy of flowers together. Thank you to everyone who joined us and brought such great energy and team spirit! 🌸✨

On 12 June, SFC members enjoyed a wonderful and enriching Ikenobo workshop led by Sensei Lim Siew Kuan at Hillcrest Arcadia.

Sensei Lim is an accredited Sokatoku (Level 18), the highest teaching rank awarded by the Ikenobo Headquarters in Kyoto, Japan, and brings with her many years of teaching experience and dedication to the art of Ikebana.

The session began with a fascinating introduction to the history of Ikenobo, the oldest school of Ikebana, whose roots can be traced back more than 500 years. Members learned how the art evolved through the centuries, from the early *Tatehana* style to Rikka, Shoka, and finally Jiyuka – the contemporary free-style form of Ikenobo.

Sensei then explained the philosophy behind an Ikenobo arrangement and guided us through the principles and rules that underpin Jiyuka. While often described as “free style”, Jiyuka still requires careful consideration of balance, movement, proportion, and harmony.

A demonstration followed, featuring palm leaves, gerberas, craspedia, and matricaria arranged in a shallow container with a kenzan. Sensei highlighted the important role foliage plays in an arrangement and showed how thoughtful placement of materials creates a balanced and effective design.

After the demonstration, participants were invited to select from an impressive collection of Ikenobo containers brought by Sensei. Kenzan (pin holders) and hasami (scissors) were also provided, allowing everyone to experience the traditional tools used in Ikenobo practice.

Members then created their own individual Jiyuka arrangements. With Sensei’s gentle guidance, critique, and encouragement, everyone gained a deeper appreciation of the art form and was delighted with their creations.

It was an inspiring morning filled with learning, friendship, lively conversations, and a shared love of flowers. Our heartfelt thanks to Sensei Lim Siew Kuan for introducing us to the beauty and philosophy of Ikenobo. 🌸

On Friday, 8 May, SFC members were honoured and delighted to bring our love of flowers to ARC Children's Centre, a day-care facility dedicated to children fighting cancer and life-threatening illnesses.

This volunteer initiative has become a cherished annual tradition for Singapore Flower Club, and we were pleased to return once again this year.

For the workshop, our committee member Evelyn Chia, who led the session, designed an adorable "Flower Candy" arrangement for the children to create as a Mother's Day gift. Together, SFC members prepared 30 sets of floral materials for the 30 children participating in the workshop.

The design featured shades of pink and purple eustoma, carnations, spray roses, and wax flowers, wrapped in fabric and ribbons to resemble a sweet floral treat. With the support of SFC volunteers and ARC staff, each child created their own unique version of a Flower Candy for their mother.

It was truly heartwarming to see the children's creativity and enthusiasm as they explored the joy of flower arranging. Through flowers, we shared not only a skill but also encouragement, care, and moments of happiness.

Our heartfelt thanks go to the teachers, staff, and volunteers at ARC for making this meaningful event possible. We look forward to continuing this special tradition in the years to come. 💐

On Friday, 10 April, SFC members enjoyed a much-anticipated workshop with the talented designer Anson Low at the Nobleman School of Floral Design.

Participants learned how to create a contemporary floral design using a glass container and a carefully balanced paper structure as a framework for intertwined florals. Best of all, no floral foam was used, making the design both innovative and environmentally friendly.

Anson began by teaching us how to create elegant leaf-like paper sculptures, followed by a simple yet ingenious method of attaching them to a glass container. He then demonstrated various floral placement techniques using beautiful materials such as anthuriums, alliums, orchids, and more.

Our members embraced the challenge enthusiastically, each creating a unique interpretation of the design. The workshop was informative, creative, and inspiring, offering many practical techniques for structural floral design.

Most importantly, it was all done in the warm and intimate atmosphere of friendship, learning, and camaraderie that makes SFC so special.

A heartfelt thank you to Anson for sharing his knowledge and creativity with us. It was truly a lovely morning! 💐

Our 55th AGM was held on 13 March at Hillcrest Arcadia. The proceedings went smoothly and followed the scheduled agenda.

The following panel of committee members was unanimously elected:

- Honorary Secretary: Seemeen Uddeen Mudeen
- Honorary Treasurer: Teo Sek Jen

We bid farewell to our Honorary Secretary Evelyn Chia Ciu Hui, Treasurer Janice Lim, and committee member Elivia Zoelkarnaen, and thanked them for their dedication and hard work during their term.

After the AGM concluded, members enjoyed a lovely floral demonstration by our President, Giang, who presented three designs inspired by an Easter theme, using tulips, narcissus, lace flowers and other seasonal materials.

During the break, we enjoyed scrumptious refreshments made by our talented cooks: Vishakha, Lucky and Janice.

All in all, it was a wonderful morning combining official business, creativity and fellowship.
