๐ŸŽญ Therukoothu Grand Finale โ€“ Celebrating Tamil Arts & Culture ๐ŸŽญ

Our grand finale for the Therukoothu (Street Play) Workshop on Saturday, 13 June 2026, was filled with passion and enthusiasm as our children embraced the richness of Tamil and Indian arts and culture.

With just 3 days of workshops and 6 hours of training, the children delivered a wonderful 20-minute performance on stage. While the presentation may have been short, the dedication, confidence, and passion displayed by the children were truly remarkable.

Many parents shared positive feedback at the end of the session, expressing how meaningful and enriching this school holiday programme had been for their children.

We were also honoured by the presence of Mr T. Raja Segar, Editor of Tamil Murasu and Chairman of ATAMโ€™s Advisory Board, who attended the grand finale. He was delighted to witness the strong appreciation shown by the Woodlands Indian community towards Tamil arts and cultural heritage.

Woodlands IAEC is truly pleased to foster this strong partnership and mutual understanding with ATAM. We share the same vision of promoting Indian culture and strengthening Tamil language proficiency among our youths. We look forward to collaborating on many more workshops and initiatives in the future.

Through such programmes, our children gain valuable opportunities to learn, appreciate, and carry forward the rich traditions, arts, and cultural heritage of our Indian community for generations to come.

๐Ÿ‘ A heartfelt thank you to ATAM, our trainers, parents, volunteers, and all participants for making this programme a success.

On the final day of our 3-Day June Holiday Workshop, students built upon the skills and artistic knowledge acquired over the previous sessions, gaining greater confidence in the art of Therukoothu. They incorporated dance, songs, and simple dialogues into their presentations, while working in groups to portray traditional Therukoothu characters such as Kattiyakaran, Raja, and Sitrarasan.

Throughout this period, our students were privileged to be trained by Mr Palani Murugan, an accomplished actor, dancer, and performer from a traditional Therukoothu (Tamil folk theatre) family. Deeply rooted in the rich heritage of Indian folk arts, he has dedicated his life to preserving and promoting traditional performance forms for future generations.

Many may not know that Mr Palani Murugan has also appeared in South Indian Tamil films, including Maaveeran (2023), and is part of the upcoming Vijay Sethupathi film Pocket Novel (2026). He was associated with the renowned theatre group Koothu-P-Pattarai for several years. Koothu-P-Pattarai is widely respected for nurturing and training many notable actors, including Vijay Sethupathi and Vishal.

Woodlands CC IAEC is delighted to have provided our children with the opportunity to learn from such a distinguished artiste and trainer, gaining valuable knowledge and exposure to the traditional art of Therukoothu and street theatre.

This Saturday, our children will showcase a short play demonstrating the skills and knowledge they have acquired through this training programme.

Woodlands CC IAEC sincerely thanks ATAM for this meaningful collaboration and partnership in preserving and promoting our rich Indian cultural heritage among the younger generation.

On Day 2 of our Therukoothu journey, students revisited and reinforced what they learned yesterday โ€” warming up with familiar movements, voice exercises, and storytelling techniques.

They then progressed to learning new performance steps and practiced the Kattiyakaran song, combining singing with dance movements and bringing energy and rhythm to their performances. To encourage collaboration, participants were also divided into groups and asked to try performing with simple dialogues, putting their growing skills into practice.

Our young performers are steadily gaining confidence and skill as they dive deeper into the art of Therukoothu. ๐ŸŒŸ

Today we begin a 3-Day June Holiday Workshop exploring the art of Therukoothu. Organised by Woodlands CC IAEC in collaboration with ATAM as part of the Nam Marabu series, around 20 students are taking part in this cultural learning experience.

Therukoothu (meaning โ€œstreet playโ€ in Tamil) is an ancient and vibrant outdoor folk theatre tradition from Tamil Nadu, India. It combines singing, dancing, acting, and elaborate storytelling.

On Day 1, students were introduced to this art form through warm-up activities, simple movements, and voice projection exercises. They also began learning about and appreciating the traditions and performance elements of Therukoothu.

Stay tuned for more updates as our young performers continue their Therukoothu journey over the next two days. ๐ŸŒŸ
