"You might think that you are not shining now. When the time comes, you can be shining even brighter than me."
One of our mentors left this sentence with us at the end of his sharing yesterday evening, when we launched the inaugural batch of BLOOM mentorship with 18 pairs of mentees and mentors.

All of us bloom very differently, and at different stages of our lives, at various pace. The project name was coined "BLOOM" to symbolise exactly this. BLOOM was born out of the motivation to made career mentoring more accessible to other young adults; we wanted to provide these opportunities to ITE students and graduates too. BLOOM is a 5-month mentorship program providing them with inspiration and support to find a better footing and clarity in career and working life, through meaningful mentorship.

In partnership with Institute of Technical Education, Singapore College Central, this batch saw a total of 18 mentees coming together to meet their assigned mentors yesterday evening at the campus. We spent time networking, getting to know one another better through small talk and interactive activities. Mentees also had protected time to share with their mentors on some of their goals and what they hope to learn from this program. Zhi Hui Ho was also onsite to onboard the mentees in using Skilio, an AI-powered skills portfolio platform that captures development of employability skills.

During the next 5 months, the mentees would have the opportunity to learn from different professionals on critical soft skills, and have intentional 1-to-1 mentoring conversations with their assigned mentors.

"My mentee gave an analogy that a mentor is like library. Even though he doesn’t own it, he hopes to pick up some learning points from our experience."

What is CrossFit?
What functional movements are we doing everyday?
How many muscle groups work and coordinate together when we are squatting?

Have you tried CrossFit before?

2 Saturdays ago, we did and learnt exactly all these when we gathered at Institute of Technical Education, Singapore College Central with coaches Lionel Choong and Agnes Chang from Innervate.

14 students from the Higher NITEC in Sport Management from the college heard & learnt from both coaches on the characteristics of CrossFit and went on to experience it themselves with a series of plate over ground, walking lunges and burpees exercises. They also learnt about inclusiveness in last segment, where they needed to give instructions to each other without speaking and so relying on gestures and body movements.

After the enriching, energetic and sweaty morning, we asked some students for their experience and these are what we heard:

“It gave me a different view of what fitness is about and I really like the CrossFit mini session that we had.”

“I like it that it was not just simply sitting down and writing notes but instead there is a mix of different activities.”

“Their own humble beginnings and overall how friendly and energetic the instructors were.”

“I like how we learnt to communicate differently to engage those who are differently abled.”

“The exposure to the new segments and experience given for us to explore further.”

This summed up the first session of BLOOM Sport, a sub-program under BLOOM organised by Voices Of Asia - powered by WeConnect. A 4-month group mentoring program, BLOOM Sport aims to bring to ITE students and graduates more insights in career pathways in the fitness/sport industry and provides them with more opportunities in personal development such as personal branding and communications. Over 4 monthly sessions, the program also allows professionals to share their expertise and stories through interactive activities.

Two Saturdays ago, 13 of us gathered together in ITE College Central to have our first in-person mentor training this year. The half-day workshop aims to better prepare the mentors of BLOOM mentorship project in engaging the youths and mentees, and to provide an opportunity for the mentors to gather and know one another better.

The role-playing activities also allowed them to lean in, respond to a realistic scenario faced by a youth, and hear different viewpoints from fellow mentors.

"As adults, we often attempt to go into problem-solving mode quickly. On the other hand, the youths and mentees might want us to listen and understand them more as a person first. Did we realise this?"
- A piece of wisdom that emerged from one of the mentors

It was an amazing afternoon of learning, interacting, sharing, connecting, and getting to know one another better. It was the first time we met in a big group setting this year, and it would not be the last. It is when we come together, that possibilities turn into realities, that everyone bring their voice into the room, and relationships are built.

We come from different professions and bring different experiences along with us. And we would like to bring mentoring to more people.

This is in preparation for the upcoming mentorship cohort of BLOOM starting on 13 June 2022. We started this program late last year, for ITE graduates and final students, providing the youth with inspiration and support to find a better footing and clarity in career and working life, as they start new jobs, discover new opportunities, and explore new paths.

It does not take one day for plants and flowers to prosper. The same can be said for human beings like you and me.

In applying this logic, Voices Of Asia created BLOOM, a mentorship program specially for ITE graduates. Standing for growth and empowerment, it is essential in providing support for them to find purpose and inclination in their prospective careers.

Just like seedlings, individuals under BLOOM are watered with the knowledge to unveil their full potential. The outcome, is that they will be able to say, “I am ready to BLOOM”.

You have your fair share in dealing with life and career challenges, and you might have been thinking "How can I share my experiences with others? How and where can I pay it forward?"

Voices Of Asia has been looking out for motivated and passionate individuals like you.
The 3 different career mentorship programs, BLOOM, iASPIRE Program and The iLEAD Project that we run all year round are made possible by volunteers such as you.

During the course of the program, you would provide several kinds of support to the mentee, from guidance, advice, feedback to a sounding board. You would serve as a role model, teacher, counsellor, advisor, sponsor, advocate, or ally, among many others, depending on the specific goals and objectives agreed with the mentee. In other words, you journey along with your mentee.
