Under the guidance and encouragement of Mr Vincent Goh Peng Boon and the Young Christian Workers (YCW), the first YCS cell group was formed in June 1956 at St Nicholas Girls' School. Subsequently it took root in many other schools and parishes, including Catholic High School, Holy Innocents' High School, Hai Sing Girls' School, Maris Stella High School, St Theresa's Convent, Hai Sing Catholic Scho
ol, St Joseph's Institution, Montfort Secondary School, Church of Christ the King etc. In the 1950's, due to social unrest and the disparateness between the Catholic Church and the mandarin-speaking community, Mr Vincent Goh started YCS with the aim of introducing Catholic teachings to the Mandarin-speaking students before they step into society. Over the years, YCS has played a part in nurturing many successful individuals in all walks of life, including bankers, teachers, doctors, lawyers, politicians, businessmen, press editors, reporters etc. In the religious domain, 4 priests, 2 nuns and many active members of various Catholic ministries are also YCS alumni. For example, YCS has become bilingual due to the change in the education system. Many rounds of membership renewal have also taken place as members complete their education. However, the spirit and mission of YCS has stood firm. Like what is written in the Bible, "You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? ... You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden... your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father." (Matthew 5:13-16)
YCS members continue to be the salt and light in transforming ourselves and the society we live in.
