I’ve received quite a few messages recently about how we run and host our chess meetups, so I thought I should share a little more about what I’m trying to build.

First, chess is actually not a “free” hobby. Once children start playing seriously—coaching, tournaments, ratings, travel and regular training—it can become a very expensive hobby, sometimes comparable to music, gymnastics and other competitive activities.

I could easily make our One Punggol Friday Chess Meetup private. Many strong chess clubs operate that way, and honestly, it would be much easier to manage.

But that has never been what I wanted.

I want this to remain a community—a place where children can play chess regardless of their level or background, and where parents gradually get to know one another too.

The challenge is that the children are the ones playing chess, while the adults often don’t know each other. With limited volunteers, there is only so much I can manage myself.

What we need isn’t for every parent to become an organiser.

You don’t need to help every week.
You don’t even need to help every month.

Even if you help once a year, that’s enough.

We already have volunteers who regularly give their time, and I’m very grateful for them. What I hope to see now is simply more adults getting to know the community and being willing to step in when needed.

And there is something else I’ve realised over the years.

The value of this community goes far beyond chess.

Every year, I see some of our chess kids move on to strong secondary schools and IP programmes. And over the years, I’ve also seen young people from our wider chess circle go much further—including one who eventually made it to Cambridge University.

But the school names are actually not the most important part.

What matters to me is the people behind these children.

We have parents from many different professions, backgrounds and experiences. Some know a lot about education. Some know technology, business, engineering or other fields. Some have older children and have already gone through the journey that younger parents are only beginning.

That collective experience is incredibly valuable.

This is why I think a chess community can offer something quite different from a group formed only around PSLE, exams or tuition.

We meet because our children happen to love chess.

Then the children make friends.
The parents start knowing one another.
People exchange experiences.
Older parents help younger parents.
And gradually, a real community forms.

Chess is simply what brings us together. The community we build around it can become much bigger than chess.

That is what I hope One Punggol Chess can continue to be.

If you’re willing to help—even occasionally—please join our volunteer WhatsApp group. Send me a message together with your profile picture and I’ll add you manually.

I won’t share the WhatsApp link publicly because we’ve had bots joining through shared links before.

There is no commitment to help every session.

Even once a year is enough. Just get to know us, and let us get to know you. ❤️♟️

Something I’ve noticed through One Punggol Chess ♟️

Over the years, I’ve met many children through One Punggol Chess. When I first knew them, even the oldest were only around Primary 6.

Later, I watched some of them move on to schools such as Raffles and Hwa Chong.

I’m definitely not saying chess = academic success.

What has impressed me more is something I often see behind these children: parents who are involved and present.

They don’t necessarily know chess, and they don’t have to sit through every meetup. But they come by, know who their children play with, meet their friends, and have some idea of what is happening in their children’s world.

When parents know their children’s friends, communication becomes much easier. Meeting other children also gives us perspective — not to ask, “Why can’t you be like them?”, but to understand our own children better.

So if your child enjoys coming to our chess meetups, I encourage you to drop by occasionally, meet their friends and see the community they are part of.

You don’t have to understand chess. Being present helps you understand your child. ❤️♟️

Dear community,

I need some adults to step up and help make sure the room is clean before we leave the venue.

I cannot do this alone every time. My son is taking PSLE this year, and I also need to manage my own family commitments.

This chess meetup is free and community-run, but it still needs everyone’s cooperation. Please help to check the room, clear rubbish, return chairs/tables if needed, and make sure we leave the venue in good condition.

If no one is able to step up and support this, I regret to inform everyone that I may have to pause the chess meetup during the exam period.

I hope everyone can understand. I really want the children to continue enjoying chess, but this can only continue if the community helps to take responsibility together.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Hi everyone, a quick note after our latest chess session.

First, I’m very happy to see our chess community growing and, especially, to see many of the children and regular players improving over time. Thank you also to One Punggol CC for supporting us with the venue and chess sets, which makes these sessions possible.

For the recent tournament, we had 80 registered participants. 72 turned up, while 8 did not, and we also had around 20 walk-ins.

I would like to clarify something important: open to public does not mean there is no need to register.

We set the tournament limit at 60 players for a reason. A 60-player event is already comparable in size to a proper chess tournament and requires significant preparation — pairing players, arranging tables and chess sets, managing rounds, results and the venue. When many people walk in without registering, it becomes difficult for us to manage the event properly.

Likewise, if you register but later cannot attend, please let us know whenever possible. This allows us to release the place to someone else and plan the tournament more accurately.

I’m asking for everyone’s cooperation to take registration and participation seriously, even though the event is free. There may be no entry fee, but there is still considerable time, effort and community resources behind every session.

One more important reminder: please help us keep the venue clean. After the last session, cups, food packaging and other rubbish were left inside the MPR and outside the room. Please dispose of your own rubbish before leaving, and parents, please remind your children as well. We are guests using a shared community facility, and we should leave it in good condition.

We want to keep these chess sessions open, welcoming and affordable for everyone, and I hope your children and families continue to enjoy them.

All we ask in return is a little cooperation:
• Please register before attending
• If you cannot attend, please inform us
• Please follow the tournament/session guidelines
• Please clean up your own food, drinks and rubbish
• Please respect the venue, equipment, volunteers and other participants

The event may be free, but the effort behind it is not.

Thank you everyone for helping us build a better chess community together. ♟️❤️
