📣 The Singapore Teachers’ Union (STU) has consistently advocated for more sustainable teacher workloads over the years. These efforts have included engagements with the Ministry of Education, Singapore (MOE), as well as advocacy in Parliament through our STU Advisors.

Earlier this month, STU Advisors Bro Dr Wan Rizal and Bro David Hoe raised these concerns through an adjournment motion, calling for teachers’ non-teaching responsibilities to be reviewed so they can devote more time and energy to teaching and supporting their students.

We welcome Education Minister Desmond Lee's announcement that MOE is studying whether teachers could focus on two instead of three key responsibilities beyond classroom teaching: form teacher duties, co-curricular activities and committee work.

The smaller class size pilot in six schools, together with efforts to reduce teachers’ workload and make better use of technology, are positive steps towards ensuring that teachers are deployed where they can make the greatest difference.

👩‍🏫🧑‍🏫 Smaller classes where they matter most. More manageable workloads. Smarter use of technology to support and empower teachers.

These developments are a step in the right direction towards better aligning teachers’ responsibilities with their core role: teaching and nurturing our students.

STU Advisors Bro David Hoe and Bro Dr Wan Rizal have called for a closer look at teachers’ workloads, including a possible workload ceiling and shifting suitable operational duties off their plates.

When teachers have more time to teach, inspire and nurture, every child benefits.

💙 When we support our teachers, we strengthen our education system.

At the Singapore Teachers’ Union, we believe a sustainable teacher workforce is fundamental to quality education.

We welcome the continued advocacy by Labour MP and STU Advisor Bro Dr Wan Rizal, together with STU Advisor Bro David Hoe, for practical measures that address workload, well-being and retention.

As AI, EdTech and new programmes reshape education, we must also examine what can be simplified, streamlined or shifted away from teachers.

Every hour freed from unnecessary administrative and operational demands is time that can be better spent teaching, mentoring and supporting our students. 🍎

Supporting teachers is not just about today. It is about sustaining the profession for tomorrow.

💬 Every Voice Matters. Every Conversation Shapes Education.

A morning of meaningful conversations, thoughtful reflections and fresh perspectives at STU Delegates’ Education Conversations with Ministry of Education, Singapore, followed by an engaging dialogue with STU Advisor Mr Shawn Loh on 29 August 2026.

Our delegates exchanged candid views on the realities facing educators, shared their aspirations for the profession, and explored how we can collectively build a stronger and more supportive education landscape.

The discussions were fruitful, open and forward-looking, reinforcing the importance of dialogue and partnership in turning educators’ experiences into meaningful conversations for the future. 🌱
