A huge congratulations to Prof Yoshiyuki Kizawa and Dr Masanori Mori for the incredible success of the 31st Congress of the Japanese Society for Palliative Medicine (JSPM). It was a remarkable event, hosting 7,000 participants! A special shout-out goes to our very own Dr. Nobuyuki Yotani, co-chair of APHN’s Paediatric Palliative SIG, for his excellent work in chairing the Congress.

APHN is proud to celebrate this achievement, and we look forward to our ongoing partnership with JSPM to further the growth of palliative care in the Asia Pacific👏

What happens when palliative care meets the ICU?

Two hospitals in Singapore are finding out. A Kinder ICU — a new $3.93 million Lien Foundation-supported initiative at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and National University Hospital — is integrating palliative care into standard intensive care treatment, bringing compassion, clarity, and family support into one of medicine's most high-stakes environments.

In this thoughtful podcast episode, a palliative care physician and an ICU nurse discuss what it really means to care well in a crisis — and why asking "what quality of life do you want to live by?" may be the most important question in medicine.

Three years ago, Dr Lianda Tamara attended EPEC training as a learner. This year, she returned as a future trainer.

In this warm reflection, the Head of Pediatric Palliative Care at Husada Hospital Jakarta shares what the EPEC Train-the-Trainer 2026 program taught her — not just about palliative care, but about the art of teaching itself: how to anchor every lesson around one clear message, how to open with impact, and how to create learning that truly transforms.

"This step felt deeply meaningful, as it marked a transition from acquiring knowledge to being entrusted with the responsibility of sharing it."

Prague, you were unforgettable! ✨ Looking back at our time at the 20th EAPC World Congress, it wasn’t just the academic sessions that left an impact—it was the people.

We had the privilege of:
🥂 Celebrating international unity at a reception hosted by the Mayor of Prague at City Hall.
🤝 Strengthening ties with our partners at Global Partners In Care.
🌏 Connecting with our friends from the Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians and our wonderful community across the Asia Pacific region.

The spirit of collaboration in the palliative care community is truly global. We left Prague feeling energised, connected, and ready to continue our work together.

Reflecting on a powerhouse session in Prague! 💭

Back in May, the Asia Pacific Hospice Palliative Care Network teamed up with the European Association for Palliative Care - EAPC Vzw at the 20th EAPC World Congress for a joint session dedicated to the future of palliative care in Asia and Europe.

From discussing leadership gaps to the transformative potential of human-centred co-design in cancer palliative care, the energy in the room was truly collaborative.

Key highlights included:
🎙️ Opening insights from Joanne Brennan (EAPC CEO) and Jeroen Hasselaar (EAPC President).
📈 Leadership development strategies shared by A/Prof Ghauri Aggarwal.
💡 A deep dive into upstreaming cancer palliative care with Prof Naveen Salins and an incredible panel discussion with experts from Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines.

Our Executive Director, Mr Giam Cheong Leong, also took the stage to highlight the Cynthia Goh Fellowship (CGF). This program is a bridge for European clinicians to impact palliative care in Asia—administered by APHN with support and direction of the Lien Foundation.

Thank you to the EAPC for hosting us. Let’s keep this momentum going! 🤝

Cervical cancer disproportionately affects women in the prime of their lives across the Indo-Pacific — and too many are still being diagnosed at advanced stages, when curative treatment is no longer possible.

The EPICC Multi-Country Palliative Care Integration Workshop in Fiji is bringing together health leaders and frontline providers to translate that reality into action: integrated national policies, stronger referral systems, and a workforce equipped to deliver compassionate care at every stage of the disease.

Fiji's Acting Permanent Secretary for Health put it plainly: palliative care must be embedded in health systems at all levels — not bolted on at the end.

Applications are now open for the 2027 intake of the 1-Year Fellowship in Pediatric Palliative Medicine for physicians from South and Southeast Asia.

Developed through a collaboration between the Two Worlds Cancer Collaboration and the Hyderabad Centre for Palliative Care, this specialist training program combines clinical placements, virtual learning, mentorship, and research opportunities to prepare future leaders in pediatric palliative medicine.

With more than 21 million children worldwide requiring palliative care each year, strengthening specialist training is essential to expanding access to high-quality care for children with serious illnesses and their families.

The fellowship is endorsed by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (UK) and offers a unique opportunity to learn alongside regional and international experts while building a network of colleagues committed to advancing children's palliative care across Asia.
