Meet Maria, our lovely para counsellor!

For over two decades, Maria has given her time to walk alongside vulnerable seniors through some of their darkest and loneliest moments.

She listens to their stories. She sits with them through their struggles. And when they need someone, she is there.

Then one day, Maria found herself facing a difficult journey of her own.

She was diagnosed with cancer.

And in that moment, one of her first worries was not just about herself.

She worried about the seniors she had been caring for.

Would she be able to get better and return to volunteering?

That is Maria.

For her, being there for others has never been just something she does in her free time. The people she cares for matter deeply to her.

And perhaps that is the heart behind everything we do at O’Joy.

Sometimes, what someone needs most is simply to know that they are not alone. To know that someone is willing to sit with them, listen to them, and walk alongside them through whatever life brings.

πŸ’™

P.S. Wondering what a para counsellor does? Para counsellors are trained volunteers who provide emotional support and a listening ear to those who need it.

Why do We Walk?

We walk for someone we love. We walk because receiving support can change a life.

We walk because listening and being present matter.

We walk for workplaces where people do not have to struggle silently.

Over the coming weeks, meet four people with four different reasons for walking β€” and discover how every step can bring hope.

Why would you walk?

How does Walk for Joy work?

1. Register & Start fundraising: Create your fundraising page as an individual or team and share your story to inspire support.

2. Complete Your Walk: Walk at your own pace, wherever and whenever it suits you throughout the campaign.

3. Celebrate Your Impact: Every step you take and every dollar you raise helps bring hope to someone in need.

There is no fixed route and no one-size-fits-all target, just a shared purpose to support mental wellness.

Psst. There is no registration fee as we believe generosity should go towards creating impact, not participation fees. However, we encourage every participant to aim for S$500 or more to help us achieve our collective campaign goal and bring hope to more people in need.

Everyone walks for a reason. What will yours be?

Some walk for a parent.

Some walk for a friend.

Some walk for themselves.

Some walk because they believe that no one should have to face mental health challenges alone.

At O'Joy, we see every day how timely support, meaningful conversations and a caring community can make a difference. Yet many people are still struggling silently, unsure where to turn for help.

That's why we're launching Walk for Joy by O'Joy β€” a nationwide fundraising campaign where every step you take helps supports mental wellness.

Whether you walk with your family, friends, colleagues or on your own, your participation helps make mental wellness support more accessible through counselling, community outreach, cognitive wellness programmes and mental wellness initiatives.

🎯 Our goal: Raise S$500,000 to support 10,000 lives across Singapore.

Whether you choose to:

πŸ’ What's the opposite of self-care?

Perhaps it's self-neglect.

In our busy lives, it's easy to put everyone else's needs before our own. We tell ourselves we'll rest later, take a break another day, or keep pushing through.

But self-care isn't a luxuryβ€”it's a necessity.

Taking care of yourself doesn't have to mean grand gestures. It can be as simple as:
πŸ’™ Going for a walk
πŸ’™ Getting enough rest
πŸ’™ Enjoying a quiet moment
πŸ’™ Reaching out to someone you trust
πŸ’™ Saying "no" when you need to

When we care for ourselves, we're better able to care for the people around us.

This International Self-Care Day, take a moment to pause, breathe, and do something kind for yourself. You deserve it.

πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ A walk is more than exercise.

It's a chance to connect, recharge, and feel supported.

Whether it's a stroll with a friend, a family member, or someone in your community, walking together creates moments for conversation, laughter, and meaningful connection.

Sometimes, the smallest steps can make the biggest difference to our wellbeing. πŸ’™

Who would you like to go on a walk with today?

Jolly ahmas and ahgongs are always a joy to have at O'Joy!
Every week, we get to see our sweet seniors during our Health Orientated Ageing (HOA) sessions where we chat with them as they engage in the activities.

Our HOA sessions are aimed at supporting our seniors' wellbeings through exercise and socialising, which has been made possible since 2013 because of our kind volunteers and generous donors. If you're curious about our charity organisation, jolly ahmas and ahgongs, & supporting our mission β€” keep up with our page!

🧠 Forgetfulness is a normal part of ageingβ€”but when should we be concerned?

Join us for an informative online talk, Do I Have Dementia?, where we'll explore the effects of dementia, learn how to recognize the early signs, and better understand how the condition impacts individuals, families, and communities.

Whether you're caring for a loved one, supporting an older family member, or simply interested in learning more, this session will provide valuable insights and practical knowledge.

πŸ’œ Growing older should never mean becoming invisible.

At O'Joy, we believe every senior deserves to feel valued, heard, and supported.

As we reflect on ageing with dignity this June, we're reminded that creating a safer and more inclusive community starts with something simple: respect.

A phone call. A visit. A conversation.

These small acts can help seniors feel connected, appreciated, and cared for.

Let's take a moment to check in on the older adults in our lives and show them that they matter.

Because everyone deserves to age with dignity, purpose, and joy. 🌊

πŸ’œ Caring for others starts with caring for yourself.

Being a caregiver can be deeply meaningful, but it can also be physically, emotionally, and mentally demanding. Over time, the constant responsibility of supporting a loved one may lead to caregiver fatigue β€” a state of exhaustion that often goes unnoticed.

If you've been feeling overwhelmed, irritable, constantly tired, or struggling to find time for yourself, know that you're not alone.

Remember:
✨ It's okay to take breaks.
✨ It's okay to ask for help.
✨ Taking care of yourself is not selfish β€” it's necessary.

This June, in recognition of Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month, let's also shine a light on the caregivers who quietly support their loved ones every day. Your care matters, and so does your wellbeing.
