𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 𝐂𝐇𝐎𝐈𝐂𝐄 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊𝐄𝐍𝐃𝐒 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄!

We young adults filled with desires and longings, struggle with poverty (brokenness) one form or another. Some of us were not loved well, or didn't know what it means to be loved well, especially in today's world which often says love is easy. The poverty we invite participants to explore is focused on their significant relationships, past and present.

The vulnerability, honesty and confidentiality of personal sharings, makes Choice Weekend an interpersonal and intra-personal retreat. In hopes that the young adults will make a choice to live authentically and vulnerably; with parents siblings, close friends, and God; to love well and love again.

For Singles, some might be wondering: How do I discern my purpose, my vocation? It can begin with Knowing my (personal) identity; knowing how I am loved well, knowing who I am, in relation to those I am called to love and serve.

For Dating singles, why start the deep and vulnerable journey later when you can start it early?
Even if both are just exploring, isn't it better to walk together in values, willingness to be vulnerable in faith and relational with each other, before deciding to take the leap of faith together?

The CHOICE program is only a weekend but the stories of your lived experience will make a difference to someone, that will last for a lifetime.

As we continue to celebrate this Christmas season, may we continue to reflect on the our gifts to others; not just the ones we make an effort to make or buy for our loved ones, but also the gift of ourselves.

Are you like the eggs in the Christmas fruit cake, used to gel the different ingredients together?
The flour that gives the cake structure, being a support for one another.
Or the colourful decorations that welcomes others, to taste and see the goodness of what you bring to the table.

Its not about the few talents we honed, things we do for others; but the many gifts of who we are, who we can be for others. Gifts of kindness, patience, joy, peace, forgiveness, gentleness love, hope, trust. These are the gifts we should offer, especially to those significant to us.

At the Table

The dining table brings family and loved ones together for a shared meal, to catch up with our lives. It reminds us of the peace that existed in our homes or the conflicts that never seemed to get resolved.

However, the demands of long working hours and food delivery services have made common meals less and less central in our community and family life.

Shall we make the table a hospitable place that invites us to kindness, gentleness, joy and peace, and creating beautiful memories?

There is someone significant in our life whom has shown us fidelity; like Mother Mary who is there, constantly interceding for us, showing a Mother's loves as God loves. Like a mother who tries to reconnect with her daughter, learning to express her love, despite their differences.

During May, the month of Mary, we travelled to some churches to pray for the community.

“I had zero expectations and felt out of place on the first day as I saw how other participants were so strong and rooted in their faith. A part of me wondered if I belong here at all.

But by God’s Grace, the weekend was one of reconciliation and healing for me. I was invited to relook into the broken parts of myself; to once again feel the pain and heartbreak that I have suppressed, and to allow myself to feel vulnerable again.

With God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26); He makes healing possible and he provides us with the necessary Graces that we need to move forward and to Love as He has called us to."

For Here and Now: Family

I used to blame my parents for showing favoritism towards my brother, and hence my addiction to compare myself with others; be it looks, physique, skills, achievements, worried I am not loved enough.

When I confronted mum and dad about how I was feeling, and wanted some clarification on why they love my brother more, the spirit moved within me, prompting me to hold back my words. Then I saw mum's saddened eyes, and tried to comfort her. She was trying to hold back her tears while saying she didn't know I felt that way, she never loved my brother more than me, and she loves both of us the same.

There may never be such a thing as a perfect family, but I need to see the good more than the bad. I have since been more grateful for their love for my brother and I. Appreciating their love, I had lesser need to compare myself; others may be loved for their appearances, but I am loved for who I am.

(Reflection by Vy Sep 2022 Weekend)

My CHOICE journey started with reluctancy and a push from my mother. I did not know what to expect and yet I found myself sitting among other participants on a Saturday morning.

Conflicting thoughts ran through my mind, I told myself to just finish it off, get it done and over with. Whereas another part of me wanted to make the best out of this opportunity so as not to waste the effort of rising up early that morning.

As the retreat started, I shut all my thoughts and decided to be present during the session, simply because I did not want to waste my weekend away. Session-by-session was conducted and I found myself immersed in it, that I did not realize time passed.

CHOICE allowed me to be honest with myself, to reflect, to appreciate and to inspect the relationship that I have with the significant people in my life. It allowed me to dig deeper into my relationship and to encourage me to make an effort to mend that before it is too late.

I learnt that “relationship is a decision”. I am the one who get to decide who I want to love and who I want to belong to. I understood that relationship requires an effort, what kind of relationship and how close I want my relationship be with the significant people in my life will depend on my action.

At the end, I could only say this retreat is about you. How much you will receive would depends solely on you, and as you journey through this retreat, you will realize that you are never alone. Additionally, as a bonus, you will make new good friends who will journey through life with you.

So, it does not matter what your thoughts are telling you at the moment, be open to the experience, participate fully and I am sure that you will have a great time.

Today we are reminded that we are ashes and to ashes we shall return.

No, this does not mean that our lives are meaningless, just as God fashioned us out of nothing, we are invited to turn the nothingness in our everyday lives into something worth living for.

What is that something which we can bring to those around us in the way we know, love and serve God during this season of lent?

On this 4th day of Lunar New Year, the Choice Singapore community had a Lo Hei and Prayer Meet. It was a great evening of fellowship and a reflection of our goals and mission in life, with a reminder to put God in the centre of our lives.
