Beyond Social Services

Beyond Social Services We envision a Singapore where low-income communities can marshal goodwill across society to live purposeful, satisfying, and hopeful lives.

Beyond is currently operating in 8 different rental housing areas with a view of facilitating mutual help and a strong community spirit among residents. We believe that when more residents begin looking out for each other, their efforts will go some way towards creating a neighbourhood where children and youths are resilient against negative influences. Our teams are currently working in Ang Mo Ki

o, Bukit Ho Swee, Bukit Merah, Ghim Moh, Henderson, Lengkok Bahru, Stirling Rd and Whampoa. We are in contact with 2,331 families, and 7,326 children and young persons. Families who have children ranging from infants to late teens, living in government rental housing. These families are from the lower end of the low-income spectrum, having a per capita income of $180 to $240 per month which is way below the $450 to $550 per capita income required for any social assistance in Singapore.

For us, it became an unexpected reflection of Zuhaira’s journey over the past year as she navigates changing plans, unexpected paths and building up her confidence.

Some futures are stitched together slowly, row by row, on your own terms and we are ready whenever Zuhaira is, in whichever way she may choose.

In this week’s Another Week Beyond, we reflect on what happens when learning becomes more than obligation, and curiosity is given space to grow. 🌱

Community Tabung is a savings programme where families pool money monthly into a communal kitty. This Hari Raya, they turned their session into a potluck and invited a few new families along.

By the end of the night, duit raya was being passed around the room. One kid looked at their envelope and said, "I can keep this for next month's tabung." 🫶🏻

The habit of saving had taken root 🌱

Turns out “meeting people right where they are” also includes meeting our teammates somewhere in the middle of a generational divide.

Different generations. Different communication styles. But the heart behind it stays the same: creating spaces where young people feel seen, supported, and able to belong without having to become someone else first. 🫶🏻

Long-term community progress takes everyone — from the veteran mentors to the new-age changemakers. Whether you’re on team “live laugh love” or team “let them cook,” we’re all here to support young people right where they are, and right as they are. 🔥

Beyond first came to Ummi's door years ago, asking if her son wanted to join an art programme. He was in kindergarten then. Now, her son is currently serving National Service, and she finds fulfilment and happiness at the studio in Whampoa with her Sew Can We friends.

But she wasn't always like this.

Ummi lost her husband in 2020, during circuit breaker. He was the sole breadwinner and her son was in Secondary 2. She had to remain steady as the waves of grief washed over her and learn how to keep moving for both her son and herself.

The way she got through it was by keeping busy — volunteering, picking up skills, showing up. That's just who she is.

When she joined Sew Can We last year, she already knew the basics of sewing picked up from other programmes. Here, she found a trainer who values everyone's input, teammates she jokes around with, and a craft she's genuinely growing in.

It's not just about the income, though that helps. It's the sense that she's getting better — that they all are, together. When a product turns out nice, she feels

"The best part is when I complete an item and it turns out very nice. I feel a sense of pride."

She's sold her products at pasar malams (night markets) before but she says Sew Can We is different.

Selling at platforms like Boutiques Singapore, she finds that customers come back. They recognise the team. They remember the work. And sometimes, they come back excited to see what else they have in store this year.

"I didn't expect that people like us who are self taught would receive this kind of support. To know they will buy — it drives me to do better, nicer products."

Having graduated from Sew Can We, Ummi and her teammates are now part of Project Enterprise. Come see their handmade products at Boutiques Singapore this week.

Mdm Zhou has been sewing since her children were young. It was how she kept the household going — taking in factory work from home and making do.

When Covid-19 struck, a community worker saw her gift and asked if she'd help sew masks for people who needed them. She had the skills, the machine and most importantly, the heart for giving, and so she said yes.

She didn't know anyone in Sew Can We then. They weren't neighbours. And they didn't even share a language — Mdm Zhou primarily spoke Mandarin while others spoke Malay or English.

They used phone translators, gestures and more often than not, some "guess-timation", and usually, they got it right.

Her Malay teammates picked up enough Mandarin to say 谢谢 (thank you in Mandarin) when she helped them through a stitch and she gathered with her team at a table when they yelled "Makan makan makan!" (eat in Malay)

That's the kind of community Sew Can We had become to her.

"Last time we each did our own products. Now we do it together. Everyone does their part and we earn together." Mdm Zhou says.

Working out how to improve a product when you can't easily talk it through isn't simple. But they sit down anyway — figuring out the process, the finishing, what works and what doesn't.

"When people buy our products, it means they recognise our hard work. I'm very happy."

Having graduated from Sew Can We, Ummi and her teammates are now part of Project Enterprise. Come see their handmade products at Boutiques Singapore this week.

Growth doesn’t happen in just one way. 🚶🏻‍♀️

At Beyond Social Services, our work is guided by the Circle of Courage, supporting children through belonging, building confidence, learning to stand on their own, and eventually, giving back.

These aren’t separate stages, but experiences that unfold over time. And when children are supported in this way, something comes full circle.

They don’t just grow.
They give back. 🌱
