How do you turn a region once defined by conflict into one known for thriving enterprise? The answer lies in the intersection of strong leadership, targeted investment, and the power of global trade.

Meet Cherrilyn "Lycah" Baylon, MIB, a Hinrich Foundation Global Trade Leader who is doing exactly that in the Philippines. After completing her Master's in International Business, Lycah took her expertise back to her home region in Mindanao. As the Enterprise component head for the Philippine Rural Development Project, she connects small and medium rural farmers with the resources they need to reach new markets.

Her work is transforming lives, most notably in Sulu, where a coffee industry once devastated by war is now blooming again. By helping farmers navigate government support, modernize their facilities and master supply chain logistics, she is ensuring that their produce reaches buyers who value quality and sustainability and creating jobs.

Watch this inspiring story of how trade can be a catalyst for peace, resilience and lasting prosperity. 👇

What can a lavender stuffed teddy bear teach us about the shifting fortunes of China's middle class?
Author Dinny McMahon unpacks the famous consumer phenomenon sparked by Xi Jinping's 2013 visit to Tasmania. The sudden, massive demand for Australian lavender teddy bears highlighted an era of rising incomes and a strong Renminbi that acted as a consumption subsidy. The video contrasts that golden era with today's lived realities of deflation, eroded housing wealth and massive price divergences that have made traveling and buying abroad far less viable for China's middle class.

Discover the economics behind the teddy bear phenomenon in the full video.

How do factories maintain global dominance and cut costs by 85% when wages rise?

Author Dinny McMahon explores the manufacturing hub of Shaodong, where cigarette lighter factories faced acute labor shortages and surging wages. Instead of relocating to cheaper labor markets, they underwent multiple rounds of rapid industrial upgrading. Through aggressive automation, these factories cut their workforces by 95% and manufacturing costs by 85%, serving as a blueprint for how Beijing plans to protect its complete domestic production chains.

Is China's economy fundamentally stuck on an export-driven loop?

Author Dinny McMahon breaks down the reality of 's structural economic vulnerabilities. While analysts predicted a long-term shift toward a consumer-led economy, massive property market declines and local government debt have limited Beijing's domestic options. As a result, roughly one-third of the nation's growth has stemmed directly from exports, creating an intense reliance on a global market that is increasingly resistant to absorbing the surge.
