This weekend, Tim Shriver, Chairman of Special Olympics, was named the 2026 recipient of the Laetare Medal by the , one of the oldest and most distinguished honors awarded to American Catholics.

For decades, Tim has championed a more inclusive world, helping grow the Special Olympics movement to more than 4 million athletes across 200+ countries and territories.

"The athlete running a race this afternoon, and their family cheering at the finish line, deserves to know the world is paying attention," said Dr. Timothy Shriver.

This honor from Notre Dame recognizes not only Tim's extraordinary leadership but also his enduring moral vision, one that continues to transform lives and strengthen the bonds of our shared humanity. We are deeply grateful for Tim's courage, compassion, and lifelong commitment to service, and we celebrate this recognition with immense pride.

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the quiet strength of mothers everywhere. ❤️

For Special Olympics Pilipinas athlete Kim Edwards, that strength comes from his mother, Jacqueline Cortez.

After the heartbreaking loss of her husband and other son (Kim Edwards’ twin brother), Jacqueline chose resilience and healing so she could continue supporting her son’s future.

With her encouragement, Kim Edwards joined Unified Sports (which brings together people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities through sport) at his school. There, he found purpose, passion, and confidence through training and competition.

As Jacqueline says: “Edwards gives me strength to continue living. For him, I’ll give everything.” ❤️

Tag your mum, the one who held you steady when life didn’t. 💜

We are filled with gratitude for the way our partners showed up to support our inaugural Champions of Inclusion Awards event on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD) last December, standing shoulder to shoulder with us in advancing inclusion.

🎥 Avery Dennison, Bank of America, Hilton Asia Pacific, Ipsos, Lions Clubs Internationall, Macquarie Group Foundation, mavic.ai, UPS Asia Pacific, as well as Ambassador of Ireland to Singapore Sarah McGrath, volunteer photographer Nicholas Leong, and Special Olympics Singapore Athlete Leader Daiyan Aniq Bin Mohammed Faizal, shared what working with our movement means to them, and their fondest memories in driving inclusion for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Sustainable partnerships are vital in driving lasting change. Working alongside our partners, we seek to develop shared-value partnerships and engagement opportunities while furthering our ability to deliver life-changing interventions to people with IDD through year‑round sports, health, and leadership programs.

Together, we continue to champion inclusion, celebrate diversity and meaningful progress! 💙

The leaders we meet take action and drive meaningful change to better the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities every day. They constantly inspire us to do better and to lead with heart. Across our movement, we see this ethos come alive in different ways.

Masrur Ahmed Himel from Special Olympics Bangladesh stressed the importance of personal advocacy and collaboration to strengthen collective action, while Dr. Naris Chaiyasoot, Board Chair, Special Olympics Thailand, highlighted how it’s critical to learn from best practices to further grow and build stronger ecosystems.

For Frances Louise Scholey, National Director, Special Olympics New Zealand, centering the work the movement does around the community we serve is essential and needs to permeate all aspects of what we do.

Behind every leader is a moment, or a person, that helped shape them.
A conversation that stayed. A belief that was passed on. A moment that changed everything.

Tell us: what is a moment with a leader that defined you? We’d love to hear your story.

This past Women’s History Month, Wood Mackenzie partnered with Special Olympics Asia Pacific to host Women & Girls Rising Through Sport — spotlighting how sport empowers women and girls with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) across the Asia-Pacific region.

With women representing just 30% of Special Olympics athletes in the region, the event focused on breaking barriers, building confidence, and creating inclusive pathways — on and off the field.

“Inclusion isn’t a box we tick; it’s something we live through the way we work and the partnerships we choose,” said Derryn Maade, Global Head of Metals & Mining at Wood Mackenzie. “Partnering with Special Olympics Asia Pacific brings that commitment to life.”

Highlighting the challenges and opportunities ahead, Jovina Choo, Senior Manager, Sports at Special Olympics Asia Pacific and Olympic sailor, shared:
“Through sport, women with IDD build confidence, develop skills, and inspire more inclusive communities. Together, we can break barriers and create lasting change.”

The panel, moderated by Pippa Woodhead, Board Member, Special Olympics Asia Pacific, featured:

- Jovina Choo, Senior Manager, Sports, Special Olympics Asia Pacific and Olympic Sailor
- Megan Tang, DanceSport Athlete and Athlete Leader, Special Olympics Singapore
- Jasmine Lai, Parent Advocate and Mother of Megan Tang
- James Andrade, Singapore Head, US-ASEAN Business Council and ASEAN Special Advisor

The evening concluded with a powerful call to action — to advance inclusive opportunities, strengthen leadership pathways, and create safe environments for women and girls in sport.

When women and girls rise through sport, everyone gains.

Tag your favourite sports buddy; the one who makes every game better. 💜

This International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, we celebrate the power of sport to build bridges, break barriers, and create a world where everyone belongs. Because sport has a way of bringing us closer, to each other, and to ourselves.

Beyond competition, sport becomes connection. It becomes inclusion. It becomes community.

And when it’s truly inclusive, it becomes a space where everyone has the chance to belong.
