What helps children thrive in school?

At The HEAD Foundation Conference 2026, presentations and a panel featuring Mr Phann Bunnath (Kampuchea Action to Promote Education), Dr Viengsamay Sengchaleun (NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health), and Dr Judhiastuty Februhartanty (SEAMEO RECFON), moderated by Dr Shenggen Fan (The HEAD Foundation), examined the role of health and nutrition in shaping learning outcomes across Southeast Asia.

The discussion moved beyond a uni-dimensional approach, highlighting how learning is influenced by a mix of health, teaching quality, safety, inclusion, governance and community support. The speakers underscored that sustainable progress depends on coordinated, multi-sector action rather than isolated interventions, bringing up national nutrition policies and community-based programmes.

How can Tuina Therapy continue to grow while staying true to its roots?

At The HEAD Foundation Conference 2026, speakers Dr Brent Bauer (Mayo Clinic), Prof Lim Shih Hui (National Neuroscience Institute, Singapore), and Prof Dr Chen Jiaxu (Jinan University) explored what it will take to advance the profession for the future, together with panel moderator Prof Tay Boon Keng (Singapore General Hospital).

From strengthening the evidence base and embedding professionalism in healthcare profession, to preparing future practitioners through competency-based training and international collaboration, the session highlighted how research, education and professional standards can work together to enhance the credibility, quality and impact of Tuina Therapy.

Can AI help healthcare systems do more with less? 🦾

At The HEAD Foundation Conference 2026, Clinical Associate Professor Tan Hiang Khoon, CEO of Singapore General Hospital, explored how artificial intelligence could help Singapore respond to three persistent pressures on its healthcare system: an ageing population, rising costs and workforce shortages.

His presentation considered how AI can support healthcare professionals, improve efficiency and strengthen the system’s ability to meet growing and increasingly complex needs.

What can an ancient civilisation and a young nation learn from one another? 🇰🇭🇸🇬

In his keynote address at The HEAD Foundation Conference 2026, H.E. Professor Dr Chhem Kieth Rethy explored this question through the metaphor of “The Banyan and the Orchid”.

, represented by the banyan, is an ancient civilisation with deep roots and a remarkable capacity to endure profound change. , represented by the orchid, is small and delicate, yet highly adaptable and continually evolving in response to a changing world.

The keynote was followed by a wide-ranging fireside chat with Emeritus Professor Robert Pho, which further explored the experiences, challenges and distinct strengths of both countries.

Together, the keynote and conversation set the stage for two days of discussion on resilience, adaptation and the value of learning from one another.

On 19 to 21 July, we had the wonderful pleasure and honour of hosting our advisory board, board members, fellows, partners and invited guests to this year’s The HEAD Foundation Conference.

The gathering at Phnom Penh brought together over 40 leaders and changemakers from the education and healthcare sectors across Southeast Asia and beyond, and gave us a chance to tap them for brilliant ideas and insights, and explore potential areas of collaboration.

From AI in health, advancing Tuina Therapy, improving and outcomes for young learners, and sustaining impact through stronger community ecosystems, we delved into key issues that will inform our next steps.

We’d like to thank all our guests for spending their time with us and seeing the value of The HEAD Foundation’s vision for the region. We hope to welcome you again in future events!
