Today, we recognise the dedication and contributions of all who shape our built and natural environments. From hands-on work on the ground to thoughtful design behind the scenes, every role plays a part in creating better spaces for our communities.

At SILA, we celebrate the people behind the landscapes whose efforts continue to shape a greener, more liveable Singapore.

Day 30:

April has taken us across cities and coastlines, forests and neighbourhoods. 30 days of work that quietly shapes the way we live. This year's WLAM theme, The Impact of Landscape Architecture, is a reminder that our discipline touches lives in ways that go far beyond aesthetics.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who followed along this month. Your work, your passion, and your support make this community what it is.

Day 30:

Conceptualised as a 5-star hotel offering a culturally nuanced guest
experience, Artyzen Hotel harks back to its former use as a sprawling
tropical-garden mansion. Embracing its unique past, Artyzen Hotel
infuses British and Peranakan flavour with greenery, replicating the feel
of an expansive villa across its 20 storeys. Quiet retreats are
thoughtfully integrated throughout, inviting guests to pause, reflect and
reconnect with nature, while reinterpreting the layered history of the site
through a contemporary hospitality experience.

Day 29:

At My First Skool @ 3 Pasir Ris Drive 6, the landscape tells the story of what thoughtful practice can achieve. Set within a former primary school compound, the project involved re-purposing the site into an Early Childhood Education centre — and at its heart, the conservation of 10 mature Yellow Flame trees that once stood on the old soccer field.

Rather than clearing the land, the design worked with what was already there. The existing trees became the anchors of a nature-integrated play environment, divided into zones representing different geographical settings in Singapore. Each zone flows seamlessly into the next, giving pre-schoolers the freedom to explore, play and connect with nature on their own terms.

From hardscape to softscape to every play element, all landscape works were designed and led by the Landscape Architect — a testament to what the discipline can deliver when given full ownership of a project.

Day 28:

Singapore Landscape Architecture Challenge (SLAC) is a two phase initiative designed to introduce tertiary students to the field of landscape architecture. In the first phase, participants are invited to
reimagine and redesign a selected route within NUS, encouraging them to explore spatial thinking, user experience and ecological consideration. Selected teams then advance to second phase where they further develop their proposals under the guidance of NUS Landscape Architecture students. This mentorship allows participants to deepen their design ideas, refine technical aspects and gain insight into the discipline through collaborative learning.

Day 27:
The landscape of the Singapore Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka is envisioned as an expression of Singapore’s City in Nature, where architecture, landscape, and experience are seamlessly integrated to immerse guests in a vibrant tropical ecosystem. Embracing the idea of Rewilding, the design reintroduces biodiversity and ecological richness, presenting a future city where people and nature thrive together.

Cultural Motifs and Community Expression
The Pavilion draws inspiration from Japanese cultural patterns, particularly the Seigaiha wave motif, symbolising continuity, harmony, and resilience. This influence is reflected in the Pavilion’s Dream Discs, which wrap the architecture in a rhythmic composition. The same circular language extends into the landscape through planting pots and spatial elements, creating a cohesive dialogue between architecture, culture, and nature.

Plant Diplomacy and the Dream Forest
At its heart, the Pavilion expresses plant diplomacy through the Dream Forest, an indoor garden that brings together plants from Singapore and Japan. Following the immersive digital experience, visitors emerge into this lush sanctuary, where they can experience Magic Hour, a daily light and sound programme. Featured within is the newly unveiled orchid, Dendrobium Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai Japan, launched in celebration of Singapore’s SG60 and the 59th anniversary of Singapore–Japan diplomatic relations.

Together, the landscape becomes a living expression of shared values that creates a meaningful and immersive experience of Singapore on the global stage.

Day 26:

At The Reef at King’s Dock by Grant Associates, water becomes the foundation for innovation and ecological resilience. Designed as a living interface between city and sea, the project introduces Singapore’s first floating residential deck alongside pioneering habitat features that support marine life. Through research‑driven design and close collaboration with marine specialists, the landscape creates spaces where people can experience the waterfront while contributing to a thriving underwater ecosystem. The Reef stands as a model for how coastal living can embrace ecology, nurture habitats, and push the boundaries of sustainable design.

Day 25:

Two student groups from Singapore Polytechnic and NUS took on the challenge in 2024 of revitalising two neighbourhood spaces in Ang Mo Kio, with SILA members as mentors to guide them through the entire design process. From site analysis to built outcome, the students navigated a real project with real stakeholders and real
communities.

Both spaces have since been built and opened to the public, with Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong in attendance, a fitting recognition of what students, professionals, and community can achieve together.
