🌻 UNIQUE Parent Support Group – A Thank You, and a New Chapter 🌻

Dear parents and friends of UNIQUE,

As UNIQUE marked its 13th anniversary last month, I took time to reflect on this journey. What began in 2012 as a small parent-led group grew into a meaningful space of support, stories, and shared courage.

After much thought, I’ve decided to formally sunset UNIQUE and its related arms. It has fulfilled its purpose, and I’m deeply grateful for every connection made along the way.

As I move forward, I’ll be focusing on sharing my experiences, supporting learning through play, and building meaningful collaborations.

Thank you for 13 years of encouragement, heart, and trust. UNIQUE will always remain a special part of my story.

🌟 22.11.2025 - Celebrating Milestones on a Very Special Day!

Today marks a double celebration for us! 💛✨

🎲 At the Celebrate Singapore Tabletop Game Show 2025, our creation "Smart Steps – The Learning Ladder" won the 🥉Bronze Award!

This game started as a simple idea: To make learning joyful, accessible, and meaningful for children with diverse learning needs.

Seeing it recognised today is such a heartwarming moment.

A big thank you to the organisers for a successful, inspiring event, and for giving us the opportunity to shine on this platform. 🙏🏻

🎉And… today is also UNIQUE’s 13th year on Facebook!

UNIQUE (UNiting Individuals through Quotidian Engagement) has grown from a small parent-led support group into a space filled with shared experiences, encouragement, and community.

To all members, past and present
Thank you for being part of this journey, for contributing your stories, your strength, and your heart. 💛

As my journey continues with both Smart Steps and UNIQUE, I hope to keep creating spaces where our children can learn, grow, and feel proud of who they are, and where parents can find connection, support, and hope.

Here’s to learning through play, celebrating every step, and building a community that lifts one another. 🌈✨

✨ Good News & Clarification for SAMS Parents (and Parents Considering SAMS!) ✨

💛 As my boy gets ready for Primary 4 next year in 2026, I’ve been doing some reading to better understand the learning pathway at St. Andrew’s Mission School (SAMS). I came across very helpful updates on the school’s official FAQ, and I wanted to share them in case they benefit other parents too. 💙

✔️ SAMS students are officially exempted from Mother Tongue Language (MTL). This means:
▪️No MTL lessons
▪️No MTL assessments
▪️No need to engage external MTL learning
▪️No MTL component for PSLE

This exemption follows MOE guidelines and is clearly stated on the school’s website. For many families, especially those whose children may struggle with language-based subjects, this brings a lot of relief and clarity.

🎉 And even better news… SAMS will be launching its Secondary/Vocational programme in 2026!
This means that when our kids finish PSLE, they have the option to:
✔️ Continue in SAMS (academic stream)
✔️ Choose the vocational track
✔️ Or move to a mainstream secondary school (based on PSLE results)

This gives our children continuity, stability, and a supportive environment tailored to their learning needs as they grow into their teen years. 🌱

💛 As a parent, I’m grateful. Everyone’s journey is different, and every child has unique needs. It’s reassuring to know that there are thoughtfully designed pathways for our children, one that honors their strengths, pace, and unique ways of learning. The future feels hopeful, and I’m excited to see how D continues to thrive in this nurturing environment. 💙

Dr Sung Min channelled her experience as a mother to a child with autism spectrum disorder to her research. She established autism services at the Institute of Mental Health and her team is now focused on the mental health of young people with autism.
