AFA'S RESPONSE STATEMENT TO KEY HIV STATISTICS IN SINGAPORE 2025

In 2025, 166 new HIV cases were diagnosed in Singapore. This is an increase from 155 in 2024.

The increase from 151 to 166 new HIV cases in Singapore in 2025 is an alarm bell, we cannot be complacent when it comes to HIV prevention. While annual notification numbers may fluctuate, a not insubstantial increase after recent declines is concerning, particularly when more than half of new diagnoses continue to be detected at late stage of infection. This indicates that our current HIV prevention and testing programmes must still be improved.

This also highlights the need to strengthen Singapore’s HIV response strategy beyond awareness campaigns alone. We need to normalise regular HIV testing, reduce stigma and expand access to effective HIV prevention tools, especially Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis or PrEP.

PrEP is one of the most effective HIV prevention tools available today but uptake in Singapore remains limited by cost, awareness and accessibility. To achieve our goal of ending HIV as a major health concern by 2030, we must have national programme that makes PrEP affordable, accessible and integrated into s*xual health/STI services. Countries in the region have already demonstrated that this can be done successfully. Malaysia’s national PrEP rollout is an example of what can be achieved when academia, government agencies, healthcare services and community organisations work together. We can and must do the same here in Singapore.

The availability of HIV self-testing kits in Singapore is an important step forward. Self-testing provides a confidential and convenient option for individuals who may be hesitant to visit a clinic, and we hope this will encourage earlier and more regular testing. However, self-testing must be accompanied by referral pathways for confirmatory testing, treatment (for positives), and prevention services (for negatives).

Oral gonorrhoea and chlamydia are often the "silent infections", posing as typical throat discomfort or sore throat when it is transmitted from person to person. Often times we may actually have it without realising it, and when we start being intimate we unknowingly pass it on to others.

What can we do? Simply get tested for both gonorrhoea and chlamydia through an oral swab test!

Oral, urine, and re**al tests for gonorrhoea and chlamydia are now available at AfA's Anonymous Testing Service (ATS).

ATS is at DSC Clinic (31 Kelantan Lane, Singapore 200031)

Saturdays, 1.30–3.30pm
(except eve of Public Holiday & Public Holiday)

🕯️ Singapore AIDS Candlelight Memorial is observed every third Sunday of May. It is a day to remember the lives lost to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, to raise awareness of HIV, and for the community to reaffirm solidarity with people living with HIV.

AfA Singapore has set up an interactive memorial at afa.org.sg/sacm . Every lit candle placed on this space has a message written by our volunteers and community partners. These messages could be personal reflections, notes of strength, or expressions of hope. Some are in remembrance of dearly departed loved ones, and some are in solidarity with people living with HIV and the wider community.

Please take some time today to visit and reflect upon these heartfelt candlelight messages.

In the spirit of showing solidarity with people living with HIV and their loved ones, do also consider making a contribution to AfA’s Care for Family Fundraiser, which supports families who are facing financial hardship from HIV treatment medical fees. More info is available at afa.org.sg/cff-fundraiser

Shine a light and pass it on. 🕯️

15/05/2026

Despite advances in HIV treatment, many families caring for persons living with HIV still face financial hardship due to rising medical costs and living expenses. This is a key barrier for adherence to lifesaving HIV treatment.

In 2007, AfA Singapore established the Care for Family Fund (CFF) to:

- Provide financial assistance to families of people living with HIV who have exhausted other means of support
- Reduce financial barriers to treatment adherence
- Enable sustainable care-related expenses

We need your support to keep this crucial programme going.

Until June 2026, all donations to the CFF Fundraiser will be matched dollar-for-dollar under the Tote Board Enhanced Fundraising Scheme. Donate today to maximise your contribution!

You can donate through these campaign pages (links also in bio):
