Formed in 1988, we are on a mission to end HIV transmission and AIDS in Singapore by 2030. The society has a staff of 12 and a volunteer pool of over 200.

AfA was formed in 1988 in response to the global and local spread of HIV infection. It is a registered Charity and is recognised by IPC (Institution of Public Character) since 2004. It has introduced numerous innovative projects and runs a broad range of support, welfare and educational programmes. It is governed by a volunteer Executive Committee and funded through programmatic grants from government agencies as well as donations from both private individuals and businesses. The AfA Endowment Fund is managed by a Board of Trustees.

As we approach World AIDS Day at every last quarter of the year, honour the legacy of Paddy Chew by supporting people living with HIV.

Paddy Chew Empowerment Fund (PCEF) was established in 1998 and is AfA’s longest-running subsidy programme. It is named after Paddy Chew, the first Singaporean who publicly shared their HIV status to challenge stigma and raise awareness.

Grounded in the principles of GIPA (Greater Involvement of People Living with HIV/AIDS), AfA supports people living with HIV who give back to the community by participating in educational activities and HIV awareness talks. In doing so, they help us reach and influence more people, and at the same time are voices for other people with HIV.

In conjunction with World AIDS Day, this fundraising project seeks to rally collective support for people living with HIV in Singapore. The fund provides critical financial assistance to help alleviate the cost of living, including access to essential anti-retroviral medications – some of which remain classified as standard drugs locally, posing a significant financial burden that can affect treatment adherence.

ST Forum: HPV Vaccination Should Protect Boys Too

We welcome the decision to subsidise the nine-valent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for eligible females and introduce it into Singapore’s school vaccination programme from 2027. However, HPV is not a women’s disease. It is a common s*xually transmitted infection affecting both males and females, and causes not only cervical cancer but also a**l, pe**le and oropharyngeal cancers, as well as ge***al warts.

There is good evidence that vaccination protects males directly. Randomised trials in young men have shown substantial reductions in vaccine-type HPV infection and ge***al lesions, while studies in men who have s*x with men have shown protection against a**l HPV infection and high-grade a**l precancer. Using a large global database of US patients, researchers found that vaccinated males had a significantly lower risk of developing HPV-related cancers—including head and neck, a**l, pe**le, and oesophageal cancers—compared with unvaccinated males. The protective association was seen across both younger adolescents and older young adults, supporting broader uptake of HPV vaccination beyond female-only strategies.

International recommendations increasingly reflect this. The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention recommends routine HPV vaccination for all adolescents, with catch-up vaccination through age 26 regardless of s*x. England has offered school-based HPV vaccination to both girls and boys since 2019. The World Health Organization continues to prioritise girls where resources are limited but recommends vaccination of boys where possible and affordable.

A girls-only programme also assumes that boys will be adequately protected through herd immunity. This protection is neither equal nor dependable, particularly for men who have s*x with men, who derive little benefit from female-only vaccination programmes.

Singapore has made an important investment by expanding access to HPV9. The next step should be to make HPV prevention gender neutral.

We urge the Ministry of Health to extend the national HPV vaccination recommendation to young males. Protecting boys directly is fair, evidence-based and will strengthen population level protection against HPV-related disease for everyone. If it cannot support a school-based vaccination for boys, then young men should be given the chance to receive the nine-valent HPV vaccine using their Medisave funds.

[Hedonist X AfA X Sagami Workshop]

Wrapping up Sexual Health Awareness Month with a bang! 💥

We teamed up with adult lifestyle brand Hedonist X (Hedonist) and AfA (Action for AIDS Singapore) for an exclusive Sagami workshop—bringing a whole new perspective to HIV prevention, safer s*x, and condom education.

Condom is never one-size-fits-all, and who says learning can’t be fun? Together, we rolled up our sleeves, dove into the specifications of condom materials and sizing, and got hands-on exploring how to stay protected. It was all about open conversations, practical skills, and empowering our community.

Panbio HIV self-testing kits by Abott are now available at AfA! With a quick, simple finger prick using the provided lancet, these kits help you test all by yourself.

📅 For sale at $35 per box, Panbio HIV self-testing kits can be used at least 21 days after the last potential exposure to HIV, compared to the 45-day window period of oral swab testing kits (also available at AfA at $25). For a conclusive test result, test again after 90 days from last potential exposure.

All are antibody-only tests, which means they're most reliable when used ~3 months after a potential exposure. Testing earlier is still useful, but a negative result before then isn't conclusive. Retest after 90 days window period for a conclusive result.
