On 20 July, we had the pleasure of conducting a Seahorse Conservation Sharing Session at Acton Academy Kuala Lumpur for young learners aged 7–12 years old!

From discovering fascinating seahorse facts to learning why these tiny marine creatures matter and the challenges they face in the wild, it was wonderful to see the students’ curiosity, enthusiasm, and thoughtful questions.

A big thank you to Acton Academy Kuala Lumpur for having us! We hope the session inspired these young ocean explorers to care for and protect our marine environment. 🧡

[HRDC Training with SBM Offshore Malaysia - Part 3]

Beyond Seahorses: Discovering the Biodiversity of Pulau Merambong 🔎

Our marine conservation journey with SBM Offshore Malaysia continued at Pulau Merambong, where participants took part in a biodiversity survey to document the incredible marine life found around the island.

Armed with cameras and plenty of curiosity, participants explored the intertidal areas and documented the species they encountered — from corals, sea stars and sea cucumbers to crabs, sea slugs, worms, seaweeds and algae.

What made the experience especially exciting was that every new discovery became an opportunity to learn. Participants were encouraged to observe carefully, photograph what they found and appreciate just how much biodiversity can be found within these coastal habitats.

These observations also contribute to a growing understanding of the biodiversity of Pulau Merambong. Building a record of the species present can help provide valuable baseline information for future research, conservation planning and management of the island.

For us, biodiversity surveys are more than simply making a species list. They are about discovering what is out there, understanding how these ecosystems function, and asking what we can do to protect them.

And who knows — some of these observations may even become the starting point for our next research project!

A big thank you to all 25 participants for bringing so much enthusiasm, curiosity and energy into the field. Conservation is always more meaningful when we discover it together. 🧡

[HRDC Training with SBM Offshore Malayisa - Part 2]

17 Seahorses, One Survey, and 25 New Conservationists in the Field 🥰

From the classroom to the seagrass meadow!

As part of the HRDC Training with SBM Offshore Malaysia, 25 participants had the opportunity to experience hands-on marine conservation at Merambong Shoal, contributing directly to our ongoing seahorse population monitoring.

During the survey, participants worked alongside our team to search the shallow seagrass meadow for Hippocampus kuda and learn how field observations, individual identification and population monitoring contribute to long-term conservation research.

And what a survey it was — 17 seahorses were encountered, making this our highest sighting record since the survey restarted in 2023! 🎉

Beyond the numbers, the experience gave participants a first-hand look at the challenges and excitement of conducting marine biodiversity research in the field. Every sighting, photograph, location and observation contributes to a much larger picture of how seahorse populations are changing over time.

The data collected during this survey will become part of the long-term Project HippoTag database, supporting evidence-based conservation and management of Hippocampus kuda and its seagrass habitat.

It was wonderful to see participants not just learning about conservation, but actively becoming part of it 🧡

[HRDC Training with SBM Offshore Malaysia - Part 1]

On the 16th - 18th July, SOS Malaysia conducted our first HRDC Training of the year with SBM Offshore Malaysia. The training began in the classroom, where 25 participants were introduced to the fascinating world of seahorses and marine conservation.

Across the indoor sessions, participants learned about seahorse fundamentals, the ecology and conservation of Hippocampus kuda, and the methods used in our seahorse population surveys. We also introduced the biodiversity survey they would be participating in during the field sessions.

But the learning did not stop at conservation knowledge and survey techniques. After returning from the field, participants took part in interactive activities, including seahorse identification and a role-play exercise exploring the different stakeholders involved in marine conservation.

Through these activities, participants gained a better understanding of how conservation is not the responsibility of a single group, but requires collaboration between researchers, communities, government agencies, industries and other stakeholders.

The classroom sessions set the foundation and prepared everyone for the real learning to begin on the shores of Merambong Shoal.

Here at SOS Malaysia, we believe in providing training that is fun, engaging, and meaningful by blending games, hands-on activities, and real-life scenarios that reflect actual field conditions, so that what is learned can be directly translated into real-world application.

🔎 Biodiversity Survey: What a Day of Discovery! 🐚✨

What an incredible day at Pulau Merambong!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and made this biodiversity survey such a memorable experience. With everyone’s sharp eyes and enthusiasm, we made so many exciting discoveries along the way!

From different species of sea stars, sea cucumbers, crabs, sea pens, seaweeds, corals, sponges, sea slugs, worms, and so much more — every corner of the island had something new to discover. 🤩

Highlight of the day? An OCTOPUS! 🐙
And of course, we can't forget the adorable “Shaun the Sheep” sea slug!!!

Our participants were absolutely amazing at spotting and identifying marine life, turning the survey into a true team effort. Every discovery added another piece to our understanding of the incredible biodiversity around Pulau Merambong.

Thank you for exploring, observing, and sharing the excitement with us! 🧡

We can't wait for our next visit to Pulau Merambong — who knows what other amazing creatures we'll discover next? 👀
