๐ฑI sat with a client who has spent many months feeling trapped by overwhelming thoughts, fear, hopelessness, and a constant desire to escape emotional pain.
Instead of trying to "fix" the problem immediately, we slowed down.
Through a simple, intuitive art exercise, the client was invited to place their frustration, confusion, and emotional exhaustion onto paper using colours and scribbles. What emerged was a tangled, messy image that reflected exactly how life felt to them at that moment.
When she looked at the artwork, she said:
"It's so messy."
And perhaps that was the most honest description of what they had been carrying inside for a very long time.
As we explored the artwork together, we began talking about choices, consequences, responsibilities, and the people we leave behind when we act from our pain instead of our hope.
Something shifted.
Not dramatically.
Not magically.
But enough.
Enough for the conversation to slowly move away from dying and towards living.
Enough for the client to begin asking questions about the future.
Enough for them to explore support options for themselves.
Enough for them to start wondering:
"What can I do when I am alone and struggling?"
To many people, this may seem like a small step.
To a therapist, this is often where healing begins.
When a person becomes curious about another possibility.
More often, it is about sitting with someone long enough, safely enough, and consistently enough until they begin discovering their own.
Today reminded me that progress is not always loud.
Sometimes progress is a pause.
Sometimes it is a question.
Sometimes it is the first moment a person begins looking towards tomorrow instead of looking for a way out.
And that is worth celebrating. ๐
