Lien Foundation

Lien Foundation A philanthropic house fostering exemplary early childhood development and eldercare excellence

As a proponent of Radical Philanthropy, we tackle the root of problems and go beyond the traditional role of donor-sponsor. We value institutional capacity building and are inspired by innovation, collaboration and new solutions in the areas of early childhood development and eldercare excellence, especially wherever we can add value to the underserved. The Lien Foundation was founded by Dr Lien Y

ing Chow, whose passion for education and commitment to the community continues to guide the Foundationโ€™s work. Orphaned at 10 years, he never had an opportunity to receive a formal education. He shared a deep concern for poor people who were deprived of the chance of an education and consistently gave a portion of his income to education over the years. In 1980, Dr Lien donated almost half of his wealth to set up the Lien Foundation to help the needy and deprived in society. He had aspirations for our younger generation to strive for a better future for our nation. In many ways, Dr Lien has blazed the trail for the Foundation to follow.

An ICU admission changes everything in an instant.

Families are often overwhelmed by fear, uncertainty and difficult decisions. Medical social workers help them process what is happening, understand their loved oneโ€™s wishes, and cope with the emotional weight.

A kinder ICU cares for families too.

Not all suffering shows up on a monitor.

Even when patients cannot speak, ICU nurses look for signs of discomfort, fear and distress. Small adjustments, early conversations and closer listening can make a big difference.

A kinder ICU begins at the bedside.

Intensive care is not just about going all out or performing CPR in critical moments.

For Adjunct Associate Professor Adrian Kee from NUH, it also includes something deeply human โ€” the ability to notice what patients may be unable to say, to ease discomfort, and to support families through some of their most difficult moments.

Together with a multidisciplinary team, this care is made intentional and compassionate, shaping a kinder ICU that is attentive, thoughtful, and grounded in dignity.

The ICU is built to save lives. But good care is more than survival.

Today, teams are looking beyond treatment alone. Comfort, dignity and family support are becoming part of ICU care from the start, not only at the end.

A kinder ICU means caring for the person, not just the condition.

A private hire driver once told her about his ICU stay. He remembered the pain from the machines and breathing tube that were necessary to keep him alive.

He survived. But the suffering stayed with him.
That conversation was a reminder that survival should not come at the cost of unnecessary pain and distress.

A kinder ICU aims to reduce suffering, while still delivering intensive care when it is needed most.

In her motherโ€™s final days, in a setting filled with machines and uncertainty, these moments created time to connect, reflect, and say goodbye.

For her, those memories mattered just as much as the medical care.

A kinder ICU makes room for comfort, connection and dignity, even in the most critical moments.

Every day in rehab tells a different story. Some loud, some quiet. Some that take months to unfold, others that happen in a single determined moment. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป
