Leadership can be as simple, and as difficult, as refusing to walk away.
When faced with a polluted lagoon, Ms Claire Chiang, Co-Founder of Banyan Group, could have walked away. Instead, she chose to stay, restore the land, and make things right. That decision would eventually lay the first brick in what became the Banyan Group empire.
This powerful story set the tone for our latest Leaders at Crossings session, attended by more than 50 C-suite and finance leaders for a breakfast fireside chat moderated by Mr Willie Cheng, ISCA Distinguished Lifetime Member.
From entrepreneur and social activist to public service and nation-building, Ms Claire Chiang shared how some of life's most defining moments emerge from unexpected challenges, and how leadership often means choosing conviction over convenience.
Five insights stood out:
✨ Business can be a force for good, creating value not only for shareholders but also for communities.
✨ Behind every business, accountants are stewards of sustainable value, turning data into foresight that drives positive impact.
✨ Singapore’s ability to draw from both East and West is a powerful advantage, reflected in both Banyan Group’s global growth rooted in Asia, and ISCA’s brand essence of “A Global Mindset with Asian Insights”.
✨ Mistakes and setbacks are not reasons to quit. They are opportunities to strengthen our resilience, perseverance, and grow.
✨ Practice gratitude, even in adversity. Challenges today may become the catalyst for growth and transformation tomorrow.
Opening the session, ISCA CEO, Ms Fann Kor shared her thoughts on purpose-driven leadership and the responsibility of serving the organisation, its members, and the accountancy profession, setting the stage for a morning of meaningful conversations on leadership and impact.
It was especially meaningful that the conversation took place at Crossings Café, a social enterprise co-founded by Mr Willie Cheng and fellow social sector leaders, an embodiment of the belief shared by both Mr Willie Cheng and Ms Claire Chiang that business and social impact can thrive together.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for an inspiring morning of candid conversation!
