In the Name of Allah The Most Gracious and The Most Merciful
Qurban -Udhiyah in arabic- is a significant religious practice in Islam carried out all over the world by billions of Muslims every year during Eid Al-Adha.
It is the practice of slaughtering an animal, usually a sheep, goat or a cow, as an offering to Allah. The practice of Qurban is celebrated in commemoration of Prophet Abraham's renowned act of obedience to the commandment of God to sacrifice his own son which was later replaced by a ram.
The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) was asked: “What is Qurban?”, He answered, “It is the sunnah of your father Ibrahim (Alaihis Salaam), for every hair of the Qurban you will receive a reward from Allah and for every hair in the wool you will receive a reward”. (Hadith – Ibn Maja and Tirmidhi).
The Qurban meat are preferably distributed into 3 parts:
- 1/3 to the poor and needy.
- 1/3 to family members and friends.
- 1/3 to the person doing the Qurban.
Aqiqah, on another hand, is defined as the animal that is slaughtered on the occasion of child birth. Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and his companions used to perform Aqiqah when they were bestowed with a newborn. There are many benefits in the performance of Aqiqah. One is the announcing the birth of the baby. Being bestowed a child is a great blessing from the Creator. Another purpose of Aqiqah is inviting family members, neighbours, and friends to celebrate the blessed occasion. The poor should be included in the celebration by offering them food.
According to the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad, Aqiqah should be performed on the 7th day if not, the 14th or 21st and so on as long before the child reaches puberty.
As mentioned in Fathul Bari, majority of islamic scholars agrees to a Hadith narrated in sahih At-Tirmizy that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked about Aqiqah and he (peace be upon him) ordered 2 sheep for a boy and one sheep for a girl and that is his tradition "sunna".)
