SAAP Collaboration with Brahm Centre @ Aljunied
Popiah Making with Mindful Eating
Saturday, 16 May 2026

It started with just another uneventful Saturday and the participants found their way to Brahm Centre @ Aljunied. Ms May Chng and Ms Hannie Hay welcomed us. The venue and partial ingredients needed for popiah making demonstration were prepared in advance. May led us to experience what Mindfulness was and we went through some exercises which helped us relax on a rainy afternoon.
May shared her experience which made her what she is today and she hopes to bring this Mindfulness programme to many people. In this “noisy” environment which we could not control the causes, we could practice the art of Mindfulness. First, it is to accept the situation and to let go of what we could not change. Having patience, gratitude and thankfulness for what we still have and to trust that the situation could become better.
Hannie explained the different types of possible popiah concoctions which depend on the original dialect groups e.g. Hokkien, Teochew or Peranakan styles. A seasoned and gifted cook, she recommended some trusted brands and suppliers for the ingredients and demonstrated frying the fillings. We had vegetarian and non-vegetarian versions and learned of other optional items to add into the fillings. Now it was the real test to wrap the popiah skins ourselves after Hannie’s demonstration. It was fun to see how all the individually wrapped popiahs were shaped.
May led us to share our experiences, and closed the Mindful Eating, using our five fingers…..
To some participants, the concept of Mindfulness is familiar. But after this event, all of us learned how to use some Mindfulness exercises to calm ourselves. Brahm Centre runs courses that are very relevant in this fast and stressful environment for children, teenagers, working adults, senior citizens and domestic helpers. It is worthwhile to slow down and check out what other activities Brahm Centre offers.
The sharing of experiences, food tasting, rolling up popiah ourselves, meeting friends and members, all added up to a wonderfully well-spent afternoon.

Laughter, encouragement, and genuine connection flowed freely, reminding us that when this community comes together, it creates an energy that is both uplifting and empowering.

Yet the magic of the evening does not end when the masks come off. The celebration continues beyond one night, living on through the renewed sense of connection, motivation, and confidence carried forward into our workplaces and collaborations.

The relationships strengthened, the appreciation expressed, and the stories shared serve as lasting reminders that recognition is not a moment, but a culture we build together - one that continues to inspire long after the last light fades.
