Building Communities, Building a Nation
Standing Together for Respectful Strata Management
As Singapore celebrates National Day, we are reminded that our strength lies in unity, respect, and collaboration. Just as our nation thrives when citizens work together, so too do our estates flourish when stakeholders and strata managers partner constructively.
In recent months, we have seen an increase in cases where subsidiary proprietors and council members resort to litigious action against Managing Agents or Managing Agent staff. Too often, this is accompanied by constant insulting emails and attempts to “bully” strata managers for perceived non-performance. Personal agendas/vendettas against Council members are re-targeted to the strata managers handling these MCSTs.
Let us be clear: strata managers are not perfect. Mistakes and lapses do occur. But taking a purely legalistic approach to every matter only drives talented professionals away from the industry and deprives the owners of the continuity and service it deserves.
The Association of Strata Managers (ASM) stands firmly behind our strata managers against such abuse. We urge all stakeholders — council members, subsidiary proprietors, and residents — to work with strata managers, not against them, in building safe, healthy, and compliant communities under the Building (Strata Management) Act. Furthermore, ASM strongly discourages the escalation of differing opinions between Managing Agents and owners. We hope minor disagreements can be resolved amicably, and we encourage owners to exercise greater forbearance and flexibility rather than insisting on individual outcomes. True community living requires a spirit of mutual compromise.
Instead of adversarial tactics or escalating differences in opinion, ASM encourages all parties to resolve minor issues amicably. We urge owners to exercise greater flexibility and compromise, prioritizing the common good of the community over personal insistence. Establishing a reasonable Service Level Agreement (SLA) with Managing Agents further creates a shared framework where expectations are clear, accountability is fair, and outcomes benefit everyone.
ASM remains committed to supporting strata managers and ensuring our estates reflect the same unity and resilience that define our nation. Strata living thrives when collaboration, respect, and compliance guide our actions. Let’s choose partnership over hostility, and progress over litigation.
Let’s celebrate this National Day by recommitting to partnership, compliance, and the common good and ensuring that Singapore’s estates are places where communities flourish.
