What are Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs)?
EALs are lubricants designed to meet specific environmental criteria related to biodegradability, toxicity and bioaccumulation.

They are commonly used in applications where there is a possibility of lubricant release into the environment, including marine, offshore, port, dredging and hydropower operations.

Within the marine sector, EALs are often considered for equipment such as stern tubes, thrusters, controllable pitch propellers and deck machinery.

When selecting an EAL, operators typically evaluate equipment requirements, operating conditions, lubricant performance characteristics and applicable regulatory requirements.

EALs and their role in marine and environmentally sensitive applications will be discussed in more detail during upcoming ALIA webinars.
Further details will be announced soon.

Vietnam is implementing EPR requirements, while China continues developing waste oil recycling standards and management systems.

These developments highlight how regulations, innovation and changing market expectations are influencing the lubricants industry across Asia.

As companies adapt to evolving requirements, discussions are increasingly focusing on:
• Emerging regulations and compliance
• Sustainability-related innovation
• Circular economy initiatives
• New technologies and fluid solutions
• New market opportunities
Addressing these challenges requires industry dialogue, technical exchange and collaboration across the lubricants value chain.

ALE 2026 provides a platform for these conversations to continue through technical sessions, networking opportunities, and knowledge sharing across the industry.

What topic do you believe will have the greatest impact on the lubricants industry over the next five years?

Sustainability discussions in Asia’s lubricants industry are evolving.
Across the region, governments, industry stakeholders and investors are exploring new approaches to used oil management, re-refining and circular economy development.

Recent examples include India’s implementation of its Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework for used oil management, alongside new initiatives in India and Singapore focused on re-refined base oil (RRBO) production and collection infrastructure.

As these developments progress, industry discussions are increasingly focusing on:
• Regulatory developments and compliance
• Circularity and resource management
• Emerging technologies
• Customer expectations
• Data centre cooling fluids
• Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs)

ALIA’s Sustainability Subcommittee provides a platform for industry stakeholders to exchange perspectives and discuss these evolving topics.

These topics are increasingly shaping industry discussions and will feature prominently at ALE 2026.

What sustainability-related trend do you believe will have the greatest impact on the lubricants industry in Asia?

Over the past four weeks, this series has explored themes shaping ongoing discussions across the lubricants industry.

Environmental and regulatory developments. China's hazardous-waste enforcement, India's EPR framework, ASEAN circular economy roadmaps, and OEM Scope 3 expectations represent active developments influencing lubricant supply chains today.

RRBO. The White Paper and webinar discussions explored where Group II and III RRBO is produced commercially in Asia, feedstock and technology considerations, differing regulatory approaches across markets, and long-term perspectives for adoption.

Bio-based stocks. Current industry discussions include renewable-origin pathways, biodegradability in some applications, and suitability depending on application requirements.

Circular economy as an operational question. Not simply as a position statement, but as a discussion around how used oil recovery, re-refining capacity, feedstock availability, and end-user requirements connect into practical supply chains.

ALE 2026 provides a platform for continued discussion across these evolving themes.
The conversations that began through White Papers, webinars, and industry dialogue continue in person.

Bio-based stocks are being explored across the lubricants industry for characteristics including renewable origin and biodegradability in some applications. Their relevance and suitability depend on application requirements, operating conditions, and evolving market and regulatory considerations.

Renewable origin is attracting increasing attention across several areas in 2025, including:
• Scope 3 and lifecycle CO₂ reporting considerations
• OEM specifications for selected applications and components
• Government procurement preferences in some markets
• Broader sustainability objectives across supply chains

Biodegradability in some applications becomes relevant where operating conditions and application requirements call for it.
Examples include:
• Forestry applications such as chainsaw bar oils
• Marine lubricants in environmentally regulated operating zones
• Outboard engine lubricants
• Hydraulic equipment operating near environmentally sensitive areas

Suitability varies depending on application requirements, performance needs, operating conditions, feedstock availability, and commercial considerations.

Current adoption in Asia remains concentrated in defined applications and specialty segments, while regulatory interest and industry exploration continue to evolve.

This forms part of ALIA’s ongoing analysis of emerging pathways shaping the lubricants industry.

Bio-based base stocks are produced from renewable biological feedstocks and represent another category being explored across the lubricants industry. Their chemistry, applications, and supply considerations differ depending on the feedstock pathway used.

Typical feedstocks commercially available today include:
Vegetable oils — soybean, rapeseed, sunflower, and palm. These may be used directly as base stocks or chemically modified into esters. Commercial volumes are available today, although performance considerations such as oxidative stability and cold-flow behavior often require additive treatment.

Used cooking oil (UCO) processed into bio-synthetic base stocks. Processing requirements are generally higher than direct vegetable oil pathways, but performance characteristics can differ.

Tall oil and forestry byproducts — already established in selected specialty lubricant applications.

Algae and biomass-derived oils — remain at an earlier stage of development and are not currently available at commercial scale for most lubricant applications in Asian markets.

Current adoption in lubricants is concentrated in biodegradable and specialty applications, including:
→ Forestry equipment
→ Marine lubricants in environmentally regulated zones
→ Hydraulic applications near water-sensitive environments

Bio-based stocks follow a renewable biological feedstock pathway, while RRBO uses recovered petroleum-derived oil as feedstock. Both represent different pathways being explored across the industry and may support different sustainability objectives.

ALIA’s next content series will continue exploring bio-based stocks.

Thank you to everyone who joined the ALIA Webinar on theRRBO and Used Oil Collection White Paper.

The session brought together valuable discussion from across the lubricants industry, with participants sharing perspectives on evolving market, regulatory and technical considerations.
Key discussion themes included:

→ Can RRBO production in Asia support future demand for higher-specification products?
→ Are collection and segregation systems a greater challenge than re-refining technology itself?
→ How may regulatory frameworks and product consistency shape future development?
→ What does the long-term outlook for RRBO look like across the region?

The White Paper was developed under the ALIA Sustainability Sub-Committee through the RRBO Task Force, bringing together contributions across the lubricants value chain.

Special thanks to Eric Holthusen, ALIA Senior Advisor, and Charlotte Kehoe, ALIA Council Chair, for leading the discussion.
ALIA members can access the full White Paper through the member portal.
Join ALIA and continue the conversation around trends and developments shaping the lubricants sector.
