Thank you, Virogreen! On 30 May, our Pasir Ris Sustainability Action Group and our Pasir Ris neighbours travelled down to Virogreen to see exactly what happens to our e-waste after we drop it off.
A few things that stuck with us:
(a) EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) under the Resource Sustainability Act now makes producers responsible for collecting and recycling what they sell. The introduction gave us the e-waste collection network we have today.
(b) E-waste is more than handphones. By weight, the bulk is large appliances โ washing machines, fridges and TVs โ plus all those wires and power banks hiding in our drawers.
(c) Storage devices go through proper secured data destruction (degaussing, crushing, shredding) before anything else โ so we can recycle that old laptop with real peace of mind.
(d) Batteries do not belong in the blue bin (think ๐ฅ !) Tossed in there, they can spark fires in trucks and recycling plants. "Wish-cycling" is real, and it does more harm than good.
The best part was being hands-on with the dismantling process, and getting a behind-the-scenes look at how our e-waste is handled and recovered.

And a heartfelt thank our neighbours who came along! Really wonderful learning, asking questions and caring for our environment together โป๏ธ
