Building Bridges: Cross-Border Collaboration in Landscape Architecture

In the spirit of International Day of Friendship (Te Rā o te Whanaungatanga), this IFLA Asia-Pacific Region Talk & Share explores how landscape architecture fosters meaningful connections across cultures, geographies, and knowledge systems.

Hosted by Tuia Pito Ora New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects (NZILA) and moderated by NZILA President Ralph Johns, this session brings together leading practitioners and academics to share two complementary perspectives on cross-border collaboration.

From Aotearoa (New Zealand), Henry Crothers (LandLAB) will present Te Ara Tukutuku, a transformative waterfront project in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland). Delivered in collaboration with international partners, including SCAPE (New York), the project demonstrates how design grounded in mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge systems) can transcend borders while remaining deeply connected to place.

Representing Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington, Dr Andre Brown, together with Keegan Barnett-Bates of Designgroup Stapleton Elliott, will share insights into the Wellington Institute at Zhengzhou University in China. This unique academic partnership promotes cross-cultural exchange, collaborative learning, and new opportunities for landscape architecture education. Keegan will also reflect on his experience teaching in China and what international collaboration means for emerging professionals.

Together, these perspectives highlight the importance of whakawhanaungatanga—building and strengthening relationships—in both professional practice and education. The session will conclude with a discussion on how landscape architects can continue to strengthen regional and global partnerships in addressing shared environmental and societal challenges.

Remembering Nigel Dunnett: A Visionary in Contemporary Landscape Design.

We are saddened by the news of the passing of Professor Nigel Dunnett.

A pioneer in ecological planting and design, Professor Dunnett transformed modern urban spaces into vibrant, resilient landscapes. From the meadows of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to the Tower of London Superbloom, his work masterfully bridged the gap between science and art.

Nigel's work has redefined the standards of our profession, providing a vital blueprint for the future of planting and landscape design projects.

We join our community worldwide in honoring Nigel’s extraordinary career and the enduring impact of his vision.
