Remembering Nigel Dunnett: A Visionary in Contemporary Landscape Design.

We are saddened by the news of the passing of Professor Nigel Dunnett.

A pioneer in ecological planting and design, Professor Dunnett transformed modern urban spaces into vibrant, resilient landscapes. From the meadows of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to the Tower of London Superbloom, his work masterfully bridged the gap between science and art.

Nigel's work has redefined the standards of our profession, providing a vital blueprint for the future of planting and landscape design projects.

We join our community worldwide in honoring Nigel’s extraordinary career and the enduring impact of his vision.

Japan Landscape Architects Union (JLAU) is launching an online talk event "Global Landscape Dialogues." This aims to bring together landscape practitioners, educators, and experts from Japan and abroad to share their insights and experiences while comparing practices across different regions, and to explore the diversity and commonalities of landscapes that emerge from their respective regional contexts. Through these dialogues, we seek to identify new perspectives on challenges that require cross-border collaboration.

For the inaugural session, [Dialogue 1.1], we will welcome landscape practitioners from the New York-based firm Starr Whitehouse, Landscape Architects and Planners PLLC and the Tokyo-based Kamijo & Fukushima and associates. They will introduce their region-rooted practices, compare initiatives in different cities and regions, and discuss diverse approaches and perspectives in landscape architecture.

The IFLA-APR Talk & Share Series brings together landscape architects and professionals across the Asia-Pacific region to exchange ideas, research, and innovative projects shaping the future of landscape architecture. Hosted by the Thai Association of Landscape Architects (TALA), this session explores the theme “A Visionary Flow: From Strategic Leverage to Transboundary Resilience,” highlighting how landscape architecture can address complex environmental challenges through strategic design, governance, and nature-based solutions.

LIVE SESSION
Tuesday, 31 March
17:00 Bangkok Time (GMT+7) / 18:00 Singapore Time (GMT+8)

The session features two presentations that move from macro-level strategies to on-the-ground landscape interventions. Mr. Sajjapongs Lekuthai (Landprocess) presents “Water as Leverage: Mediating Complexity through Design-Led Governance,” demonstrating how landscape design can bridge national policies and local river basin realities through collaborative processes. Mr. Touchapon Suntrajarn (Landscape Collaboration) presents “Healing the Kok: A Visionary Plan for Transboundary Arsenic Remediation,” introducing a nature-based approach using restored oxbow lakes and phytoremediation to address arsenic pollution in the Kok River.

Moderated by Professor Pranisa Boonkham (Thammasat University), this session highlights how strategic thinking and nature-based landscape solutions can transform complex water challenges into opportunities for regional resilience, collaboration, and ecological restoration.
