Advocates For Refugees - SG 新加坡难民支援小组

Advocates For Refugees - SG 新加坡难民支援小组 Advocates for Refugees - SG (AFR-SG) is a ground up, volunteer-led movement working for the cause of refugees and forced migration in our region and beyond.

As a community-driven initiative, we encourage ordinary and extraordinary Singaporeans, and people living in Singapore - regardless of political affiliation, religion, race and ethnicity - to participate in dialogues, explore possible roles we as individuals, as an interest group/community, and as a nation state can play to offer community-driven solutions and to help ameliorate the causes and con

sequences of forced migration. As advocates, we believe in the importance of raising awareness, facilitating conversations, and addressing misinformed perceptions (e.g. conflating all refugees, asylum seekers, stateless persons as "economic migrants" or labelling them as "illegal migrants"). On Wednesday, 5 February 2025, the 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗴𝗲𝗲 𝗔𝗱𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (link to CNA video in bio) was delivered in the Parliament of Singapore by MP Louis Ng. The motion called for greater government support for groups such as AFR-SG and Monolith, on the following key areas:

1️⃣ Registration Flexibility
2️⃣ Streamlined Process for Application of Permits to Fundraise for Foreign Charitable Causes
3️⃣ Waiver of the 80-20 Fundraising Rule

AFR-SG supports the recommendations made: calling for the government to 𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 groups like ours to grow and evolve in a supportive ecosystem, for policies to 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 people to be charitable within and beyond our borders.

Leila Boukarim and Asaf Luzon came together in December 2023 to create “A Million Kites: Testimonies and Poems from the Children of Gaza” with the aim of raising funds to support organizations helping Gazans and to amplify the voices of Gazan children who have suffered, and continue to suffer unfathomable injustices.

All profits from the sale of this book will be donated to organizations helping the people of Gaza.

Join us for a heartfelt book reading and discussion on the effects of war on children, the role of art and poetry in helping children deal with the trauma of war, and what we can do to help the victims.
