From Garden to Farm
There is much talk about learning beyond the classroom. At Fuhua Primary, this has been quietly taking root in the school garden.
What started as a gardening effort has slowly grown into something more.
Through Loving Heart’s partnership with the school, our senior volunteers support Fuhua’s GEM+ learning approach - where students learn through real experiences that bring together environmental education, values, service and problem-solving.
Over the past four years, our senior volunteers have worked with the school and students in the garden - planting, trying different ways to grow vegetables, solving small problems, and learning along the way.
Recently, this Garden to Farm journey moved into the classroom. Mr Neo, our Partnership Manager, and our senior volunteers led the sharing across six P3 classes, taking students through how the garden grew into a small farm - through trial, patience, teamwork and many small improvements.
Today, the garden is harvesting spinach, sweet potato leaves, kangkong, Thai watercress, jambu and balonglong. The harvest is shared with the school community.
The project has also gained attention along the way, including an earlier visit by Minister Desmond Lee. As Prof Teng put it, it has been a journey “from garden to farm, from farm to fame” - not fame in the usual sense, but recognition of a simple community effort that has grown in meaning.
One P3 student later wrote:
“I got to learn so many new things… I am same as a plant growing every day.”
That line stayed with us.
This was more than a gardening lesson. It was a reminder that when seniors share what they know, children learn more than facts. They learn about trying, patience, gratitude and growing together.
