✈️ Time flies — and so do our scholars! 🎌

It feels like just yesterday — 5 December 2025 — when Christopher Tjandra, Isabelle Zhu, and Jodie Ong stood proudly at our JCCI Singapore Foundation Scholarship Award Ceremony, certificates in hand and dreams ahead of them.

Now, nearly six months on, the countdown is real. 🗓️ Our three scholarship recipients are gearing up to depart for Japan for their Autumn 2026 admission — and what a meaningful time it is to be making this journey.

🇸🇬🤝🇯🇵 2026 marks the 60th anniversary of Singapore–Japan diplomatic relations (SJ60) — a milestone that makes this moment even more significant. These three young scholars are not just pursuing their education; they are the next generation of bridge-builders between our two nations, carrying that spirit of friendship forward with every step they take in Japan.

Before they go, we'd love for you to get to know them — including how SJ60 inspires them personally! 💬

🎭 A beautiful night of Noh in Singapore
Last week, as part of A Tapestry of Sacred Music at Esplanade, audiences had the privilege of witnessing two rare and sublime performances of Ritual Noh of Kurokawa — Shojo, a mythical encounter between a sake sprite and a wine-seller, and Hagoromo, a restrained and lyrical tale of a heavenly maiden and a fisherman.

The response from our local community was heartwarming. Both performances drew full houses, with audiences seated, captivated, and moved by this ancient Japanese art form — many might be experiencing Noh theatre for the very first time.

As a supporter of the Japanese segment of this event, JCCI Singapore Foundation is deeply gratified to see such a warm reception. Moments like these remind us why cultural exchange matters — not just as performance, but as a bridge between peoples.

This is especially meaningful in 2026, as we mark 60 years of Singapore-Japan diplomatic relations (SJ60). We remain committed to bringing authentic Japanese arts and culture to Singapore, fostering deeper understanding and lasting ties between our two communities.

Arigatou gozaimasu to the Kurokawa Noh troupe, Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay and everyone who came with an open heart. 🙏

🎻 A Night of Musical Excellence Celebrating SJ60 — Singapore Symphony Orchestra Concert

On 17 April, Victoria Concert Hall came alive with the magic of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra's (SSO) concert, Sayaka Shoji & Masaaki Suzuki / Mozart and Kalliwoda — a truly unforgettable evening that beautifully marked the Singapore-Japan 60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations (SJ60).

Two of Japan's most celebrated classical musicians took to the stage together — conductor Masaaki Suzuki and violinist Sayaka Shoji — delivering a performance that left the audience utterly spellbound. Shoji's elegant and expressive rendition of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5 "Turkish" captivated the hall, while Suzuki led the SSO with masterful precision through the Asian premieres of Kalliwoda's Symphonies No. 5 and No. 7. The audience's response was overwhelming, with thunderous applause that filled every corner of the historic concert hall.

JCCI President Mr Daisuke Kakihara was delighted to be among the distinguished guests for this special evening, alongside H.E. Ambassador Ishikawa and Mrs Ishikawa, Austrian Ambassador Mr Peter Storer and Mrs Storer, and SSO CEO Mr Kenneth Kwok. Following the concert, Mr Kakihara had the honour of personally greeting both artists — and presented Ms Sayaka Shoji with an SJ60 commemorative badge as a token of friendship between our two nations.

As a proud sponsor of this concert, JCCI Singapore Foundation is honoured to have contributed to this milestone celebration. In this special year of SJ60, supporting a concert of this calibre — bringing together world-class Japanese artists on a Singapore stage — is a deeply meaningful expression of the enduring bond between Japan and Singapore, united through the universal language of music.

Unravel a living tradition shaped by gods, myths and rural life from northern Japan. 🇯🇵✨

Taking place from 30 Apr – 3 May 2026, A Tapestry of Sacred Music 2026 returns to Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay with offerings that explore sacred sound, ritual and tradition from around the world. Among its highlights is the rare ritual theatre of Kurokawa noh—a centuries-old winter rite from Yamagata that continues to be performed as a sacred communal offering.

Audiences are invited to encounter this refined tradition through three interconnected programmes:

✨Ritual Noh of Kurokawa – Shojo, depicting a mythical encounter between a sake sprite and a wine-seller

✨Talk: Introduction to Kurokawa Noh, offering insight into the history, rituals and practices behind the artform

✨Ritual Noh of Kurokawa – Hagoromo, a restrained and lyrical tale of a heavenly maiden and a fisherman

JCCI Singapore Foundation is proud to be one of the supporters of A Tapestry of Sacred Music 2026, supporting the Japanese performance segment and the presentation of Kurokawa noh.

Experience how ritual, music and movement weave together a tapestry of sacred traditions.

🎬 What a wonderful evening at the Asian Civilisations Museum!

Last Saturday (11 April), we had the privilege of attending the Official Premiere and Panel Discussion of Summer Island (シンガポールの夏) — a beautiful architectural short film produced by Shiya Creative Studio that captures the soul of Singapore through the eyes of a Japanese lens.

JCCI Singapore Foundation is truly honoured to be a supporter of this meaningful film project. Seeing the auditorium filled with guests from both the Singapore and Japanese communities reminded us of the deep and enduring friendship between our two nations.

🗓️ And the journey doesn't stop here! Summer Island will be screened in Tokyo at Hibiya OKUROJI on 23rd May (Saturday), 16:00–17:00 — bringing Singapore's story to a wider Japanese audience.

As we celebrate SJ60 — the 60th anniversary of Singapore-Japan relations this year — we believe that art, architecture, and film are among the most powerful bridges between our peoples. Summer Island is a heartfelt tribute to that bond.

Congratulations to the entire team behind this remarkable film. We look forward to seeing it touch many more hearts in Tokyo and beyond. 🇸🇬🤝🇯🇵

🥋 Kumite Seminar | 22 March 2026

JCCI Singapore Foundation was honoured to be invited to support the Kumite Seminar organised by Seigokai Karate-Do Association Singapore!

JCCI Vice President, Mr Satoshi Shijima, attended the event where he was introduced to guest lecturer Sensei Dunyarat Rattanaphun by organiser President Shihan Kelvin Koh.

Sensei Dunyarat's impressive credentials — Thailand National Team (1996–2005), National Head Coach (2007–2009, 2013–2022), and former WKF Judge — made for an extraordinary learning experience for the 50+ practitioners aged 6 to 55 in attendance.

Highlights of the day included demonstrations of Kata Suparinpei by Singapore national athlete Senpai Jazreel Yap, Kata Papuren by a talented 13-year-old practitioner, and a live Kumite sparring demo — all inspired by Sensei Dunyarat's expert guidance.

Mr Shijima presented a token of appreciation to Sensei Dunyarat, and received one in return from Shihan Kelvin — a meaningful exchange reflecting the spirit of collaboration and mutual respect. 🤝

Congratulations to Seigokai Karate-Do Association Singapore for a truly inspiring event!

JCCI Singapore Foundation looks forward to supporting more meaningful community initiatives ahead!
