For our first Just Transition Reading Club session, we are gathering a small group of curious minds to explore one of the most contested questions in today’s energy transition: Does nuclear have a place in a just and sustainable future?

We will be unpacking the nuclear debate via discussion, and in conversation with Prof M.V. Ramana, author of Nuclear is Not the Solution. Readings will be shared with registered participants via email.

DNV will be unpacking insights from their 2025 Energy Transition Outlook and what it reveals about the global energy landscape. We’ll also be hosting a fireside chat with beez-fm to explore what these shifts mean closer to home, especially for energy efficiency and the built environment (buildings sector).

Some questions we’ll be asking:

📈 Are we truly transitioning our energy systems, or simply adding renewables on top of rising energy demand? Why are energy conservation and demand reduction often less visible than new supply projects?

💡 In buildings, tenants usually pay the energy bills while owners control infrastructure. How much does this slow decarbonisation, of the buildings sector, and how might we redesign incentives to solve the pain points of building owners?

🏢 Why is embodied carbon still such a blind spot in corporate decarbonisation strategies, and how do we move from a rebuild-first mindset toward adaptive reuse and circularity in the built environment?

Looking forward to an honest conversation about where the real leverage points are, not just in technology, but in incentives, systems design, and how we rethink energy demand itself. ⚡

Last night, Energy CoLab had the opportunity to join as a partner for From Crisis to Clarity: Understanding our Energy Blindness. Huge thanks to the generous invitation of Khai Seng Hong and team!

Designed as a watch party with curated clips of Nate Hagen’s videos, Khai Seng’s light facilitation prompted us to think about how energy and the economy are entangled within the metacrisis. Nate’s three-layered pyramid offered a stark yet simple visual for confronting an inflated financial economy built upon a rapidly depleting living biosphere.

The depth of discussion and audience were vastly different from what we typically encounter. In our efforts to make energy accessible, we often try to find a balance between oversimplifying complex realities and overwhelming people with the true scale and severity of the challenges we face.

Studio Dojo showed us that confronting despair can be necessary. Allowing existing mental models and narratives to collapse may be what creates space for more creative and transformative possibilities to emerge. Khai Seng invited us to reflect on our stress responses (fear, flight, fawn, freeze), and how these map onto the roles we may adopt when facing the metacrisis: king/queen, lover, warrior, jester.

As we speak about “collapse”, we recognise that multiple collapses are already unfolding, from recent floods in Indonesia to the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Different communities face vastly unequal capacities for recovery and renewal. Within our circles, we grappled with what it means to confront these truths from relatively comfortable positions in Singapore, where we are deeply “abstracted”, extracted and alienated from labour and land.

As we enter our fifth year, we hope to sharpen our advocacy and education work by learning alongside and from partners like Studio Dojo, who are actively experimenting with new methodologies and pedagogies for engaging with complexity, to move forward with the humility that we do not have all the answers.

Rather, we continue to guided by sound theories of change, and with hope that we may still witness “creative transformations in our lifetime”, as KS puts it 🌟

The 'Climate Fresk' is familiar to many of us in the environmental space. But here’s the twist: this time, our kids are taking the lead! 🌱🧠

One month ago, we asked: can our children be active agents in climate education, not just learning, but leading the way?

We believe they can.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been working with a group of incredible young minds: not just as participants, but as peer educators who can guide, prompt, question, and inspire. Watching them step up with confidence has been nothing short of powerful. Now, they’re ready to co-lead their first Climate Fresk session for peers their age! 🫡

Join us for a 🌟special edition🌟 of Climate Fresk for Juniors (for ages 10–13) and witness what climate education can look like when we trust kids to lead the way. Here, we spotlight some of the thoughtful conversations we have been having during our prep sessions. 💬

Our youth delegates will share their experiences at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, and break out into smaller groups to dive deep into the various topics!

As the co-lead of the Singapore Youth Delegation to COP29, MJ will also provide an overview of the Climate Youth Development Programme and what might be in store for COP30 in 2025, which will be held in Belém, Brasil.

In October, alongside peer trainers and alumni from .nus , we ran the first public run of the Italy-ARENA Action for Climate Toolkit (I-ACT) in Singapore at the Singapore Sustainability Academy, thanks to the generous venue support by CDL and the team. 🌱

The toolkit was officially launched in December 2022 as a training programme for young climate leaders, jointly organized between the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). from attended the first phase of the programme and conducted the inaugural workshop targeted at NUS students with .nus in June this year.

In line with Energy CoLab's aim to make energy education more accessible, we are grateful to have collaborated with Natalie, Elizabeth, Ryan, Si Liang and Bianca to bring this to a greater audience! In addition to the six comprehensive modules in the toolkit - from the fundamentals of debunking myths of climate change to energy scenarios, energy policies, other impacts and solutions - we led a mini crash course on Singapore's energy landscape. Where are we now, and what can be done better? 🇸🇬

In particular, the facilitated activities brought our amazing participants together through discussions and even a debate! 👀

Our community of peer trainers here in Singapore continues to grow, and we're looking forward to building it and leading more public workshops in the new year!
