Last Monday, we were notified by a resident about two tenants who had recently moved into a 1-room rental flat in the block. The unit was almost empty, so a home visit was arranged the very next day.
The moment I arrived, the condition of the unit spoke for itself.
I realised I couldn’t even remove my footwear before stepping in. The floor was covered with thick dust, black stains, and grime throughout the unit. After seeking their consent, I entered the unit with my shoes on.
One of the tenants has been working part-time as a cleaner just to survive day by day, while his co-tenant has been struggling with mental instability and has remained unemployed for close to six months.
They asked for free meals, so I submitted both names for Willing Hearts lunch bentos, and they received them the next day.
Yet amid the heaviness of their situation, kindness quietly began to appear — one after another.
The very next day, we unexpectedly received a message from CSS Integrated Pte Ltd, asking if there were any seniors’ rental units in need of cleaning, as their cleaning crew happened to have some free time that day.
Without delay, arrangements were made immediately.
Within just 2 hours, 4 cleaners arrived at the unit and got straight to work. What was once filled with dust and neglect slowly began to feel livable again.
Then, 2 days ago, one of our teammates stepped forward and passed on 2 single mattresses. Another teammate managed to arrange a lorry from his workplace and personally delivered them after finishing work late that night.
And this morning, another group of volunteers from Woodlands Westlite dorm — our migrant brothers — chose to spend their precious off day repainting the entire unit.
Halfway through the painting works, we discovered that the WC flushing system was malfunctioning. Thankfully, our handy migrant brothers managed to repair it on the spot.
Next Tuesday, our teammate will send down a foldable table.
Next Friday, 2 single bed frames sponsored by 4-Star Mattress will be delivered to the unit.
By early June, a preloved fridge will also be sent over.
Sometimes, kindness does not arrive in grand gestures.
It arrives quietly — through people who choose to show up, lend a hand, give their time, offer their skills, or simply care enough to do something.
Piece by piece, an empty rental flat is slowly becoming a home. ❤️
