Introducing our guest speaker of the month: Timothy Heng, the first Singaporean and Asian anti-poaching ranger in South Africa!

Timothy is an adventurer, mountaineer, and founder of The Outside, a Singapore-based company that makes trekking and expedition experiences accessible to everyone. In 2023, he became the first Singaporean and Asian to complete an intensive anti-poaching ranger training programme in South Africa, gaining first-hand experience of the challenges faced by rangers on the frontlines of wildlife conservation. Set in challenging environments of the African Savanna, where preparation and decision-making are critical, the training offered a rare look at the physical, mental, and ethical demands placed on the rangers tasked with protecting wildlife.

Through his expeditions and training programmes, Timothy focuses on building meaningful connections with nature and supporting long-term conservation initiatives, helping others engage responsibly with the natural world.

Join us at the Hollandse Club Singapore on 26 March as Timothy shares first-hand accounts of what patrols in active conservation areas really look like. He will also reflect on how the experience reshaped his understanding of conservation, shifting the focus away from sharing interesting content online towards taking more direct action on the ground.

Meet RGS-Singapore's first speaker of 2026 - Louis Alexander!

Louis is a modern-day adventurer, global speaker and two-time Guinness World Records Holder. He is the first — and only — person in history to complete marathons on all Seven Continents and swim marathons in all Seven Seas. Over 633 days, he tested his endurance across some of the world’s most unforgiving environments, from running through torrential rains in the Amazon Rainforest and braving the freezing temperatures of Antarctica to swimming in the scorching heat of the Arabian Sea.

At just 26 years old, Louis is one of the youngest professional adventurers in the world. His expeditions have raised tens of thousands for charity and have been featured in major international media, including National Geographic, BBC News, Sky News, and The Morning Show in Australia. The Times dubbed him the “modern-day Byron” following his successful swim across the Hellespont Strait from Europe to Asia.

When he’s not on an adventure, Louis is passionate about sharing the stories and lessons from his travels with corporate and school audiences. To date, he has spoken to tens of thousands across Europe, Asia, and North America, including as the Guest Speaker at Eton College and 10 Downing Street. Through his talks, he candidly recounts the journey from his first adventure at age 19 to achieving two Guinness World Records by 26, while exploring the core values behind his success: resilience, purpose, sacrifice, perseverance, and teamwork.

There's just one week left to grab your tickets for our January 22 talk at The British Club Singapore via the link below - please sign up as soon as you can to avoid disappointment!

Thank you for joining us for our final event of 2025 with Grant 'Axe' Rawlinson - Powerful Humans at The British Club Singapore!

Our members had a blast putting their teamwork and decision-making skills to the test as they followed Grant on his fully human-powered journey between Singapore and New Zealand in the format of an interactive game. From navigating the busy shipping lanes to the south of Singapore, to the month-long cycling across northeastern Australia, Grant's expedition was not just a test of physical strength, but also how quickly and effectively one adapts to unforeseen challenges throughout the arduous journey.

The highlight of the expedition was none other than Grant and Luke's record-breaking 22-day crossing of the Tasman Sea in a rowboat, which shattered the previous world record of 31 days. This was no easy feat, as the journey was made possible only after multiple failed attempts and intensive re-strategising by Grant and his team over nearly a full decade. Grant highlighted the importance of responsible risk-taking in expeditions, as well as keeping an open mind to innovative ideas that can help one examine obstacles in a different light.

Congratulations to Grant for fulfilling his 11-year-long dream of linking his two homes, Singapore and New Zealand, completely by human power! The RGS-Singapore team wishes Grant the best in his future endeavours.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the evening, and wishing you a joyous festive season ahead! Stay tuned for more updates on our 2026 events!

Yours,
RGS-Singapore Committee

RGS-Singapore presents: "Never Back Down: A Human-Powered Journey from Singapore to New Zealand"!

In 2017, Grant 'Axe' Rawlinson - Powerful Humans set out to connect his two homes — Singapore and New Zealand — completely by human power alone. The idea was simple, but the reality proved far from it. Cycling and rowing for thousands of kilometres, countless setbacks — most of them on the Tasman Sea — turned what he thought would be a linear journey into a huge test of the human spirit.

Time and time again, the sea smashed Axe and his boat. But instead of giving up, he returned with new ideas, stronger boats, and a never wavering sense of belief. After multiple failed attempts and 8 years of trying, he finally succeeded in completing the connection between Singapore and New Zealand completely by human power in March 2025. This came after a record-breaking 22-day-long crossing of the Tasman Sea that shaved nine days off from the previous human-powered world record of 31 days.

This talk is about more than one journey. It’s about what it takes to stay with a goal that seems impossible, how you find the will to keep going when you are beaten down time and time again, and what such a path can teach us about the power of focus, resilience, and humility.

Join us at the The British Club Singapore on 20 November 2025 for an interactive session with Axe to learn more about this extraordinary journey! Sign up here: https://www.eventbrite.sg/e/grant-axe-rawlinson-never-back-down-tickets-1891902664799

Thank you for joining us for "Walking Free: Ending the Landmine Era, One Field at a Time" featuring Bill Morse!

Bill gave a comprehensive overview of the history and impacts of landmines in Cambodia, as well as the detailed processes of landmine removal by demining organisations. Bill emphasises that the key to successful landmine removal efforts is not (just) technology, but a commitment to the cause given the sheer extent of landmine contamination. Furthermore, it is also crucial that these efforts go in tandem with investing in socio-economic development, to generate a long-lasting positive impact on local communities.

Thank you Bill for the insightful presentation, the Hollandse Club Singapore Team for hosting us, and all who attended the event!

Our final event of 2025 "Never Back Down: A Human-Powered Journey from Singapore to New Zealand" is now open for registration! Check out the details here: https://www.eventbrite.sg/e/grant-axe-rawlinson-never-back-down-tickets-1891902664799

See you again later this month!

Last call for tickets for 30 October! Don't miss this final chance to sign up for our event "Walking Free: Ending the Landmine Era, One Field at a Time" featuring Bill Morse, President of the Landmine Relief Fund!

Bill is a graduate of Kemper Military College and Texas Christian University, where he studied history, economics, military science, and education, receiving a bachelor’s degree in 1971. He served as an officer in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, although never deployed to Southeast Asia. Bill ran his own business for over 40 years before shutting it down to concentrate on clearing landmines in Cambodia.

In 2003, Bill heard of an ex-Khmer Rouge soldier named Aki Ra, whose quixotic mission was clearing landmines by hand. He and his wife traveled to Siem Reap, Cambodia, to find Aki Ra and learn more about his work. After meeting him, they returned to the US and started the Landmine Relief Fund, a US charity to raise money to clear landmines and unexploded ordnance in Cambodia.

In 2007, Bill began working to establish a new, smaller reactive demining NGO in Cambodia. He thought it would take a few months. Bill stayed for nearly two years. In November of 2008, Cambodian Self Help Demining was issued a demining license by the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority. When CSHD received its license, Bill closed his business to work full-time with CSHD. He has been the chairman of the board at CSHD since May 2024.

Bill and his wife have expanded their work to include building primary schools in remote villages, primarily ones that were affected by minefields. To date, they have funded the construction of 46 primary schools in 35 villages in Cambodia. All are built through the Rural Schools Support Organization, a Cambodian NGO. All schools are owned by the government and staffed with certified teachers. RSSO, with funding from the LMRF, provides school supplies for nearly 5,000 children attending these schools.

Bill lectures to groups at the Cambodia Landmine Museum, to universities and organisations around the world. He has spoken at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library, Eton and Marlborough Colleges in the UK, the Royal Geographical Society in Hong Kong, as well as numerous locations in the US.
