🦇Think bats are spooky? 🦇 Think again!

These often misunderstood animals actually play a vital role in keeping our ecosystems healthy. They help disperse seeds that support pollination and forest regeneration and keep insect populations in check.

Last month, together with Mandai Wildlife Group, we took over 30 staff and volunteers on an after-hours journey into the world of bats. They learned about the 12 bat species found in the Mandai Wildlife Reserve, like the lesser Asiatic yellow house bat, lesser short-nosed fruit bat and pouched tomb bat. They also had the opportunity to witness our Ecology team using bat detection equipment and learned how they monitor bat populations and roosting sites.

By learning more about the wildlife that shares our spaces, we can foster greater appreciation and be inspired to protect them.

Hidden within Indonesia's Natuna islands lives the Natuna langur, a little-known primate found nowhere else in the world.

Our Head of Species Grants and Impact and resident primatologist, Dr Andie Ang, travelled to the islands to meet the people working on the frontlines of its conservation. From engaging local communities and students to seeing the langurs in the wild, the visit was a meaningful reminder that protecting wildlife starts with each and every one of us.

Dr Andie also had the opportunity to observe the critically endangered Serasan silvered langur, a sub-species found only on Serasan island, and visited elementary school students to build support for conservation and education programmes raising awareness around the Natuna langurs.

Supported through funding by The Earthshot Prize and Bezos Earth Fund, this work reflects the power of partnerships in safeguarding Southeast Asia's unique and irreplaceable wildlife.

Freshwater mussels might not get much attention but they play an important role in keeping aquatic ecosystems healthy. Yet, they are among the world's most threatened groups of organisms, and many species remain poorly understood.

To help protect freshwater mussel species in our region, we jointly facilitated a conservation planning workshop in Sumatra, Indonesia.

Funded by the Mohamed Bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund and co-organised by IUCN SSC Conservation Planning Specialist Group Southeast Asia Resource Centre, IUCN SSC Mollusc Specialist Group, University of Nottingham and Universitas Sumatera Utara, more than 20 researchers, conservationists and government representatives came together to identify key threats and prioritise conservation actions.

This will lay the groundwork for a coordinated conservation plan early next year, that will guide targeted efforts around this overlooked freshwater species, and ensure they have a future in our ecosystems.🐚💧

In memory of a dedicated conservation champion and friend

It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of our dear friend and long-time conservation partner, Dr. Sabine Schoppe. As co-founder of Katala Foundation Inc., Sabine was internationally recognised for helping pull at least 3 critically endangered native Philippine species back from the edge of extinction. For more than a decade, we witnessed her commitment to conservation and were privileged to a ring side view of her leadership role especially in the Philippine Freshwater Turtle Conservation Program, and Philippine Pangolin Conservation Programme, which have truly transformed outcomes for these species.

Beyond her many accomplishments, we will especially remember Sabine for her kindness, humility, and ability to inspire others. She was a passionate educator and advocate, generously shared knowledge, encouraged collaboration, and fostered partnerships that brought people together in pursuit of a common goal. Her legacy lives on in the species she championed conserving, the landscapes she helped conserve, and the many people she positively touched and inspired throughout her life and career.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to family, friends, and all who knew and loved her. While their loss is deeply felt, we take comfort in knowing that Sabine’s work has left a lasting positive impact on the natural world. It truly is an honour to have been part of her journey on earth.

Over the past year, together with our partners, supporters and communities across Southeast Asia, we've continued to advance wildlife conservation, science, research and conservation capacity building.

Some of the milestones we're proud to share:

🐾 More than 60 threatened Southeast Asian species supported through targeted conservation action
🤝 Over 40 conservation and research grants delivered by regional partners
🌳 More than 151,000 hectares of key habitats protected through on-the-ground conservation efforts
🌿 Over 116,000 seedlings planted in forest restoration initiatives
👥 More than 146,000 livelihoods supported through conservation-linked activities
🧬 Over 4,000 biological samples banked from 146 threatened species
📋 Over 380 youth engaged in targeted programmes to raise conservation capacity and leadership
🦎 119 wildlife species recorded during biodiversity surveys across the Mandai Wildlife Reserve

In 2015, the Singapore Freshwater Crab Conservation Strategy was established as a collaborative roadmap to guide research and conservation management for one of Singapore’s most threatened endemic species. Now ten years on, we will commemorate a decade of collaborative conservation between the National University of Singapore (NUS), National Parks Board (NParks) and Mandai Nature through an upcoming seminar, organised by the Freshwater Crab Conservation Working Group.

The public seminar will highlight and celebrate achievements, discuss emerging challenges, and chart future directions for the long-term survival of Singapore’s natural heritage.

A decade of hope for Singapore's Raffles' banded langurs💚​🐒

Thanks to 10 years of dedication, collaboration and community action, the population of this critically endangered primate has grown to around 80 individuals, and there's hope for the future of langurs in Singapore.
