Collaborating across borders for the Vietnam pheasant ๐ŸŒฟ

Recently, colleagues from Mandai Nature and Mandai Wildlife Group travelled to Vietnam to visit Viet Nature Conservation Centre โ€“ a shared learning trip to exchange knowledge, better understand the ongoing work of our conservation partner in the field, and strengthen our joint efforts for one of the world's rarest birds.

The Vietnam pheasant has not been recorded in the wild since 2000, and fewer than 100 individuals remain under human care globally, including a population managed by Mandai Wildlife Group at Bird Paradise in Singapore.

Conservation is a two-way conversation โ€” and trips like this remind us how much there is to learn from partners on the ground, and how we can further support their work. ๐ŸŒฑ A warm thank you to the VietNature team for their generous hosting and for sharing their insights so openly.

We look forward to what this partnership will achieve for the Vietnam pheasant.

For the past 10 years, a group of volunteers have been spending their weekends in Singaporeโ€™s nature parks, helping to track our rarest native primate โ€“ the Rafflesโ€™ banded langur ๐Ÿ’๐ŸŒณ

Through a citizen science programme by the Raffles' Banded Langurs Working Group, theyโ€™ve helped identify food plants, mapped movement patterns, and spotted gaps in forest habitats. These insights have led to real conservation actions like planting corridors and building canopy bridges.

With over 1,000 volunteers trained to date, this effort goes beyond data collection. Itโ€™s about building a community of people stepping up to protect our wildlife.

More than 150 young conservationists from over 20 countries, including youths from the CITES Global Youth Networkโ€™s Asia chapter (CGYN Asia), came together in Singapore for the World Wildlife Day Regional Youth Symposium ๐ŸŒ

Organised by NParks' Youth Stewards for Nature, participants sparked meaningful conversations, exchanged ideas for a more sustainable future and co-created a roadmap to tackle the illegal wildlife trade.

Together with Mandai Wildlife Group, we also hosted a hands-on workshop at the Singapore Zoo on "Wildlife Conservation: Veterinary Care for Trafficked Wildlife", offering a behind-the-scenes look into post-mortems, wildlife rehabilitation and the specialised care of confiscated invertebrates and reptiles.

Mandai Nature is proud to support the next generation of conservation leaders in capacity building and co-creating meaningful networks. ๐Ÿ’š

Our biobanking team has been on the move! ๐ŸŒ

Dr Oz Pomp, Hui Li Yeo and Christina Lim joined the Vietnam National Biobanking Strategic Planning Workshop at Vinh University in Vietnam, sharing insights from Mandai Natureโ€™s biobank while working alongside local teams on hands-on training and technical assessments. It was a great opportunity to learn from global partners and help shape Vietnamโ€™s national strategy โ€” while refining our own approaches too.

At the same time, Dr Nicole Tay and Dr Kanchana Punyawai visited Kasetsart University in Thailand, where they picked up and practised cell extraction techniques from chicken embryos. These new skills will help accelerate our efforts to safeguard threatened bird species.

Key takeaways:
๐ŸงซGrowing momentum for โ€œtranslational biobankingโ€ by turning samples into real conservation impact
๐Ÿฃ Greater capabilities in avian PGC biobanking to support future population restoration
๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ”ฌStronger partnerships and shared learning to protect biodiversity together

How do we come together to protect what truly matters?

This short film, launched at "Wild at Heart", our first-ever fundraising gala, marks a special milestone for us.

More than just a reflection of Mandai Nature's journey, it is a call to action. Across Southeast Asia, biodiversity is disappearing at an alarming pace, and the need to act has never been more urgent.

Yet, there is hope. By working with dedicated partners on the ground, advancing science-based innovations and investing in the future conservation leaders, we are focused on building a world where people and nature thrive.

We hope our story inspires you to be a part of protecting the natural world we all depend on.

โœจ A truly unforgettable evening, filled with shared purpose and hope for our natural world ๐Ÿ’šโœจ

On 30 March 2026, Mandai Nature held our inaugural fundraising gala, "Wild at Heart", at the Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree. It was a deeply moving night, seeing our guests come together with one shared goal โ€” to protect Southeast Asiaโ€™s extraordinary wildlife, the ecosystems they depend on, and the passionate people working tirelessly behind the scenes.

We were honoured to be joined by our Guest-of-Honour, Patron of Mandai Nature and President of the Republic of Singapore, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and Ms Jane Ittogi, whose presence underscored the importance of conservation for our shared future.

The evening also marked the introduction of the Mandai Nature Academy, a platform that will equip conservationists with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to create lasting impact in Singapore and across the region. Learn more about the Mandai Nature Academy here: https://bit.ly/mandai-nature-academy

Thanks to the generosity of our donors and supporters, we raised over S$500,000 which will receive match funding through the Tote Board Enhanced Fundraising Grant. These funds will be a powerful investment that will protect biodiversity, and strengthen the people and partnerships working on the ground.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for standing with us. Together, we can build a future where wildlife and people thrive - because we are all wild at heart. ๐Ÿ’š

Our Youth Executives Ting Wai Kit and Shawne Goh recently connected with young sustainability champions from Gifu Prefecture, Japan, in an exchange hosted by Temasek Foundation.

The students, winners of a sustainability ideathon, shared their inspiring project ideas, while Wai Kit an Shawne spoke about their experiences in conservation, from being part of the CITES Global Youth Network to shaping Mandai Natureโ€™s youth programmes.

All in all, an inspiring session where youths learnt from one another, and a reminder that together, we can build a stronger community of changemakers for our planet. ๐ŸŒ ๐Ÿ’š

Fewer than 250 Javan green magpies are believed to remain today, due to pressures from the illegal songbird trade, habitat loss and degredation.

But a new Conservation Strategy and Action Plan for the species has been launched, a major step forward for this species on the brink of extinction.

Weโ€™re excited to have helped bring this plan to life, working with IUCN SSC Indonesia Species Specialist Group, IUCN SSC Conservation Planning Specialist Group and IUCN SSC Asian Songbird Trade Specialist Group to facilitate the workshop and support the development of the plan.

Together, weโ€™re turning collaboration into real action for the Javan green magpie. ๐Ÿ’š
