This oud community hopes to be a platform where local oud players would be able to get together & share knowledge, information, techniques & playing styles of this exotic instrument, regardless of music genres or ethnicities. The idea to build Singapore's very own oud community was conceived right after the 1st Singapore Gambus Conference, which was held from 25th to 30th October 2016 at the Malay
Heritage Centre. Henceforth, "Singapore Oudists" was born. The aim of this community is to:
- introduce the oud/gambus & its playing techniques & styles to current music practitioners & interested parties;
- re-introduce its function in the different Malay music genres other than those which we are familiar with, such as Zapin & Ghazal;
- educate the masses on its important role in the traditional music in this region;
- introduce & develop the “New Malay Style” in gambus playing, incorporating Middle Eastern & Turkish oud playing styles in Malay music;
- cultivate interest in the minds of the new musicians & nurture oud soloists & virtuosos;
- provide new learners or interested parties ease in purchasing or owning an oud and its accessories from trusted sellers;
- organise masterclasses and workshops by professional oudists & oud luthiers;
- organise concerts and shows for entertainment as well as educational information.
