📰 Training on Climate Resilience and Leadership Skills Equips 43 Young Coffee Farmers in East Java for a Sustainable Future

What does it look like when a 19-year-old steps into her family's coffee farm with new purpose and a plan?

For Lavingga Tantri Nursila, that moment came during a two-day training at the Surya Abadi Kayumas Cooperative in Situbondo, East Java. “I am more inspired and motivated to be a coffee farmer,” she says. “Hopefully, soon, I will be able to manage my own coffee farms here, so that the heritage of Kayumas coffee continues and is further developed by the locals.”

Lavingga was one of 43 farmers and cooperative members who came together in April 2026 for a Fairtrade NAPP training on climate change and youth leadership in Kayumas Village, East Java. Participants of all ages explored climate-smart agriculture, built practical risk assessment skills, and developed action plans tied to the cooperative's sustainability goals.

One of the key shifts was recognising how existing practices already align with climate science. The shade trees, agroforestry methods, and attention to soil are not just good habits; they are real climate adaptation strategies. That recognition gave participants confidence and motivation to keep learning.

For women farmers, the training opened conversations about the financial dimensions of climate risk. Cindi Dwi Wardani, 21, shared: “I am now aware that we must start building our climate resilience and financial resilience by gradually implementing adaptation measures in my farms and my overall daily life.”

Following the training, participants committed to maintaining their forests and farming practices. The cooperative established collective learning groups to build the next generation of Kayumas leaders. Fairtrade NAPP has committed to including selected youth in upcoming training on sustainable agriculture and financial literacy, planned for September 2026.

The next generation of Kayumas coffee farmers is stepping forward. There is much still to do, but this is how the journey continues.

📰 Fairtrade Coconut and Cashew Farmers from Kerala Farmers Gain Practical Tools to Farm Through a Changing Climate in collaboration with College of Climate Change and Environmental Science (CCCES) , Kerala Agricultural University

At a two-day workshop in Cherupuzha, Kannur, 86 coconut and cashew farmers from Fair Trade Alliance Kerala came together in April 2026 to explore one of the most pressing challenges facing agriculture today. The workshop on climate change and biochar was organised by Fairtrade NAPP in collaboration with the College of Climate Change and Environmental Sciences, Kerala Agricultural University.

What made this training stand out was not just the science it covered. It was what happened after the formal presentations, when farmers started raising the questions they had been carrying with them for a while.

How much would biochar actually cost us to produce? Can we really make it from coconut shells and cocoa pods we already have on the farm? And what about the companies approaching us with promises of money from carbon sequestration projects, are they a genuine opportunity or something to approach with caution?

These questions deserved honest answers, and they got them. Biochar is possible using low-cost methods suited to smallholder farms, including modified earth pits and repurposed drum kilns built from materials already available. On carbon markets, the guidance was equally direct: costs are often too high for individual farmers to manage alone, and the safest path is to engage collectively through Farmer Producer Organisations that can share costs and protect members from unfair terms.

Farmers also heard something that affirmed what they already do. Their mixed cropping systems, coconut intercropped with cocoa and spices, are already functioning as effective carbon stores. Working with the climate does not always mean starting over.

This workshop is part of Fairtrade NAPP's ongoing work alongside farmers in South India as they navigate real and growing climate pressures. These 86 farmers leave with a clearer picture of what is changing around them, and practical tools to respond.

📰 Building Stronger Fairtrade Leadership: Technical Training for Compliance Committees in Tea Plantations at Hatton, Sri Lanka

On a single day in Hatton, Sri Lanka, 42 workers and management representatives from five Fairtrade certified tea estates came together to deepen their knowledge of a committee that exists to protect and represent them in the workplace.

The Fairtrade Compliance Committee (FCC) is a formal part of the Fairtrade Tea Standard, designed to ensure that workers' rights and Fairtrade requirements are actively monitored at estate level. On 8 April 2026, Fairtrade NAPP worked alongside workers and management from Madulsima Plantations PLC, Stassen Natural Foods (Pvt.) Ltd. (Idulgashina Bio Tea Garden), Horana Plantations PLC , Bogawantalawa Tea Estates PLC, and Hatton Plantations PLC in Hatton, Sri Lanka.

The training was held in both English and Tamil, with reference materials in participants' own languages to take home. Workers did not just receive information; they actively shaped it by contributing directly to developing the evaluation criteria that will be used to assess FCC performance across their estates.

The session also covered workers' rights under Fairtrade hired labour standards, including freedom from discrimination, freedom of association, and the right to collective bargaining. Twenty-six of the 42 participants were women.

"Building knowledge on the Fairtrade Compliance Committee is crucial from the workers' perspective. As workers, we have a significant role to play, and we will strive to implement FCC functions effectively in the workplace."

- P Balaandran, Worker, Stassen Natural Foods (Idulgashina Bio Tea Garden)

"We have gained a great deal of insight through these trainings, and we feel like Advanced Level graduates. I will ensure that the knowledge gained today is shared with my fellow workers."

- J Queen Rosary, Worker, Bogawantalawa Tea Estates PLC

A follow-up workshop for Fairtrade Officers across all five estates is now being planned, to build on what workers gained in Hatton and ensure these improvements continue at estate level.

The future of ending Child Labour in the Asia Pacific region will be shaped in farming communities.

Across Asia and the Pacific, an estimated 27.7 million children remain engaged in child labour, with nearly 46% working in agriculture. Behind these numbers are children whose rights to education, health, protection, and a safe childhood are at risk.

Yet there is hope.

The region has achieved a remarkable reduction in child labour over the past two decades, demonstrating that progress is possible when governments, businesses and communities work together.

At Fairtrade NAPP, we recognize child labour as one of the most critical human rights challenges facing agricultural communities. That is why our approach goes beyond compliance to address the root causes of vulnerability.

Because agriculture is where the challenge is greatest—but also where the opportunity for change is greatest.

When farming families earn sustainable livelihoods, when young people become advocates for change, and when communities are equipped to identify and address risks, children are safer, stronger, and better able to thrive.

Together, we can create a future where every child is free from labour, protected from harm, and empowered to reach their full potential.

🤝 Ending child labour requires collective action.

Our thoughts are with the farmers, workers, and communities in the Philippines affected by the recent magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off the coast of Mindanao, impacting areas including Sarangani, South Cotabato, General Santos City, Digos, Santa Cruz, and parts of the Davao Region.

At present, four Fairtrade coconut and banana producer organizations in Mindanao have been affected. Our regional team is working to maintain contact with the affected members, understand their situation, and gather information on the impacts faced by their communities.

As assessments continue, we stand in solidarity with the affected producers and recognize the resilience and determination of farming communities as they work to safeguard their livelihoods and navigate through this challenging time.

📰 Fairtrade NAPP Pacific Regional Conference 2026 - Strengthening Leadership, Voice, and Market Priorities

Across the Pacific, producer leadership just took an important step forward. On 23 and 24 May 2026, smallholder farmers and producer representatives from Fiji, Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea gathered for the Fairtrade NAPP Pacific Regional Conference and Product Network Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The 02 days of in-person dialogue gave Pacific producers a direct platform to elect new regional leaders, agree on coffee and sugar priorities, and shape how Fairtrade NAPP supports the region in the years ahead.

Key Outcomes:

🔹Devan Chand from Fiji was elected Pacific Regional Coordinator and Carlito Alves from Timor-Leste as Deputy Regional Coordinator, both unopposed, with a clear commitment to strengthen producer voice and collaboration across the region.

🔹A milestone moment came with the presentation of the first-ever Fairtrade NAPP Lifetime Achievement Award to Bal Subramani of the Lautoka Cane Producers Association, Fiji, recognizing 26 years of service to the sugar industry and to producer organizations.

🔹Coffee producers, particularly from Timor-Leste, called for stronger buyer engagement, support on EUDR and HREDD compliance, organic certification, productivity and quality improvements, and greater participation of women in leadership.

🔹Sugar producers focused on protecting Fairtrade sales, closer engagement with the Fiji Sugar Corporation and the Ministry of Sugar, a Fiji Roadmap and Premium investment in productivity enhancement.

🔹Producer members also approved the revised Regional Conference Charter Version 2 and the Code of Conduct for Fairtrade NAPP Producers Version 2, and received updates on the Fairtrade NAPP Strategy 2026–2028.

The conference reinforced what producers themselves underlined: in-person dialogue builds stronger trust, collaboration and clarity than virtual meetings, and the priorities agreed in Kuala Lumpur will guide Fairtrade NAPP's work alongside Pacific producer organizations in the months ahead.

From Climate Risk to Climate Resilience: Growing Sustainable Futures Across Asia-Pacific

At Fairtrade NAPP, environmental sustainability is not just about protecting nature — it is about protecting livelihoods, communities, and the future of agriculture.

Across Asia and the Pacific, over 190,000 farmers and workers are on the frontlines of climate change. Rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall, droughts, floods, and biodiversity loss are already reshaping agricultural landscapes and threatening the livelihoods of farming communities.

“Behind every crop is a producer adapting to a changing climate. Behind every sustainable choice is an opportunity to protect people and the planet.”

This World Environment Day, let's move beyond awareness:
👉 Support sustainable agriculture
👉 Stand with farmers building climate resilience
👉 Invest in a fairer, greener future for the people and planet.

Because a sustainable future can only be built together.
