【Shantou TCM Delegation Visits Thong Chai — Bridging Seas, Continuing TCM Legacy】
On the afternoon of 9 July 2026, at 2:00 pm, a delegation led by Mr. Chen Chao, Dean of Shantou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, together with representatives from Shantou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Shantou Municipal Health Bureau, visited Singapore Thong Chai Medical Institution (STCMI) and Thong Chai Institute of Medical Research for an exchange visit.
STCMI Chairman Mr. Yeo Eng Koon delivered a welcome address on behalf of the Board of Directors and all staff. He shared that Singapore and Shantou share deep historical and cultural ties, with strong foundations for collaboration in cultural exchange and the development of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). This visit marks an important opportunity for both institutions to further strengthen cooperation in healthcare services, research innovation, talent development, and the preservation and advancement of TCM.
In his address, Mr. Chen Chao shared that Shantou, a renowned hometown of overseas Chinese, has maintained close connections with overseas Chinese communities for many years. Established in 1958, Shantou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine has grown over six decades into an important TCM medical institution in eastern Guangdong, integrating clinical services, education, research, preventive healthcare, and rehabilitation. The hospital continues to promote TCM innovation, talent cultivation, and international collaboration. It has established cooperative relationships with countries including Thailand and Cambodia, further contributing to the global development of TCM.
During the visit, both parties exchanged insights through institutional introductions, experience sharing, and discussions on their respective practices in TCM healthcare services, research development, and the inheritance of TCM knowledge. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony was also held, marking a new milestone for future collaboration.
The visiting delegation expressed great appreciation for STCMI’s commitment to providing free TCM healthcare services for 159 years. Since its establishment, STCMI has remained committed to its founding mission of “serving all regardless of race, religion, or nationality; providing free medical care and medicine; and promoting Traditional Chinese Medicine.” Through its continued service to the community, STCMI upholds the spirit of “compassionate healing and boundless love.”
Although separated by the sea, both institutions share a common commitment to advancing TCM and serving the community. We look forward to working together to strengthen Singapore–China TCM exchanges and creating greater opportunities for collaboration in the future.
