[Enhanced penalties to address illegal wildlife feeding]
Illegal wildlife feeding, especially of pest birds such as pigeons and crows, creates hygiene and nuisance issues in our urban environment.
Over the years, we have been working with partner agencies, Town Councils, and the community to address this through a broader, multi-pronged approach to wildlife management. This includes reducing food sources that attract wildlife, managing wildlife populations, as well as strengthening public education and community engagement, alongside enforcement.
To better deter persistent feeding behaviour, penalties for illegal wildlife feeding have been enhanced. For first time offenders, it will increase from $5,000 to $10,000, while repeat offenders can be fined up to $20,000. Additionally, repeat offenders can be jailed for up to 12 months. The amendments also provide the Courts with a wider range of sentencing options, including community based orders where appropriate. This was shared in Parliament earlier today by SPS Dr Syed Harun Alhabsyi. These new penalties will come into effect later this year.
We all have a role to play. By not feeding wildlife and disposing of food waste properly, we can help keep our neighbourhoods clean, safe, and pleasant places to live for all.
