With the recent increase in fatal workplace accidents, the Ministry of Manpower has announced a voluntary Safety Time-Out for two weeks starting from today (26 June 2026), alongside strengthened enforcement measures.
SNEF encourages employers to take this opportunity to step back, reset and refocus on workplace safety by reviewing their workplace safety and health (WSH) practices:
โ
Ensuring workers only carry out work that they have been trained and authorised to perform.
โ
Conducting thorough safety briefings before work begins so that workers clearly understand onsite hazards and the control measures in place.
โ
Ensuring established safe work procedures are followed at all times, and that safety measures are never bypassed or shortcuts takenโeven for routine tasks.
โ
Reviewing, implementing and rehearsing emergency response and evacuation plans to ensure preparedness.
โ
Promptly escalating workplace incidents to safety officers, supervisors or emergency responders, where appropriate. Timely intervention can save lives.
The strengthened enforcement measures are a response to the regrettable spike in fatal workplace accidents. We recognise that these measures are intended to reinforce the importance of maintaining high WSH standards and will be stepped down once the situation improves.
Workplace safety requires constant vigilance and commitment. In line with the National WSH Campaign of โI Choose Safety. Together We Care.โ, we must together build a strong safety culture through continuous improvement, regular risk assessments, effective communication and the active participation of every single worker at the workplace. Even where existing measures are in place, periodic reviews can help identify areas for improvement and prevent complacency.
Taking care of our workers goes hand-in-hand with resilient business operations and productivity. SNEF remains committed to working with our tripartite partners and employers to strengthen workplace safety and health across all sectors.
